Job summary

Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde) is home to the United Kingdom’s Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines,  Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Cdo Royal Marines. It is an operational support and maintenance base, within the Navy Command TLB and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites. HMNB Clyde’s primary purpose is to provide engineering and logistical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD). This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.             

With the introduction into service of the Dreadnought Class later this decade an opportunity exists for a suitably experienced engineer to work within the Superintendent Faslane Site's Directorate and lead the development, readiness and integration of capabilities within HMNB Clyde in support of the new PWR3 systems and technologies associated with this new class of submarine.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. 

Job description

The purpose of the Dreadnought Class Integrator is an engineering role employed to ready HMNB Clyde Nuclear Procedure Authorisation Group and associated functions for the arrival of HMS DREADNOUGHT and the transition to support to PWR3 operations.  The role is responsible to the Authorisee for the leadership, oversight and management of Superintendent Faslane Site's preparations for Dreadnought PWR3 readiness across all naval base Lines of Development ensuring an integrated approach to new requirements.

Additionally, the role is responsible for the organisation and capability development of polices, processes and procedures that directly support PWR3 methodologies and operations within HMNB Clyde.

The successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of the operating philosophy behind PWR3 technology and associated Secondary Systems.  They will be responsible for using that knowledge and understanding to identify differences in current policies, processes and procedures from current class and develop requirements and solutions to ensure HMNB Clyde has the correct information, training and infrastructure to support the new capability.  This will require close interaction with naval base directorates and industrial partners.

The successful candidate will act as the SFS Single Point of Contact within the Dreadnought Transition Working Group and Naval Base Transition arrangements ensuring nuclear safety and conventional safety and design intent is maintained across all vessel support capabilities including H&S, non-nuclear maintenance status and general operational capability.  They will represent SFS on Dreadnought Readiness and associated committees ensuring SFS interests on waterfront capability, readiness and delivery are presented.  They will also provide assurance to the Site Authorised Activity Manager that all Dreadnought activities/operations that are planned to be undertaken within the HMNB Clyde Authorised facilities and utilities are developed in conjunction with the safety cases ensuring design intent for PWR3 operations as detailed in the approved Safety justification and associated Design Substantiation is maintained.

 The successful candidate will ensure that development of Secondary System Cleanliness regimes and policies, processes and procedures unique to PWR3 are identified and managed developing any organisational changes required are correctly managed, ensuring those organisational changes are captured for negotiation and agreement during Industrial Partner contract negotiations.

Person specification

The successful candidate must have previous experience in operational delivery in a nuclear safety driven environment with operational experience of submarine Pressurised Water Reactor operations and nuclear facilities gained in an operational environment at sea or ashore.

The successful candidate should have strong organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and a proven history of delivering high quality outcomes to time and cost.
