About the job

Job summary

The Home Office has one of the most challenging and critical jobs in Whitehall: to keep Britain safe and secure. We operate at the heart of the Government's agenda, leading on immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime policy, counter-extremism and counter-terrorism and work to ensure visible, responsive and accountable policing in the UK. The challenges the Department faces are significant and can change rapidly in the global environment in which we operate, making this one of the most exciting and stimulating Government Departments in which to work.

A Minister is directly accountable for decisions made by government, and effective Ministerial communication – whether in Parliament, to the press, or through correspondence – is crucial to how the government communicates decisions and policies.

We receive high volumes of correspondence from MPs, members of the public, international partners and interested third parties. The HO Strategy Group have recruited a small team of Correspondence Managers to support Junior Ministers in their external communication, and an opportunity has now arisen here.

As a Ministerial Correspondence Manager, you will be based within the central correspondence unit but work directly with the Minister to understand their communication style and preferences. You will manage the flow of correspondence, using your judgement skills to prioritise urgent responses. You will work with policy teams, operational teams, and central correspondence unit colleagues, to coordinate timely, accurate responses to correspondence.

Job description

As part of a team of three correspondence managers, you will work closely with Ministers’ Private Office teams, although will report to a correspondence unit manager. Although you will be designated particular Ministers, we expect all correspondence managers to work flexibly and support each other to ensure the best service is provided to all Ministers.

Working with Private Office is an exciting opportunity at the heart of government, providing a real insight into how Parliament, Ministers and Government works. It provides exposure to and experience of a wide range of policy and operational areas within the Department and across Government. You will work to protect and further improve the Home Office’s relationship with Parliament and to achieve Ministerial priorities. The production of timely and high-quality responses to ministerial correspondence is a crucial part of fostering this relationship and promoting ministerial priorities, and your role will be key to this work. Roles working within, or closely with, Private Office are great for your personal development.

The role would suit a highly motivated individual with excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. You will need the ability to deliver calmly under pressure, manage multiple and competing priorities, write clearly to engage and inform senior decision-makers and liaise effectively with a range of cross-governmental stakeholders.

Due to the nature of the role this post is only available on a full-time basis.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estates capacity, by Spring 2024. Applicants can request further information regarding how this may work in their team from the Vacancy Holder (see advert for contact details).

  • Building a trusted working relationship with the Minister(s) to understand their communication style and tone, and work with the Department to ensure correspondence reflects this.

  • Building and maintaining effective relationships between Department, the Direct Communications Unit, the Parliamentary team, and MP’s offices.
  • Providing consistent quality assurance reviews on Ministerial correspondence.
  • The role is rich, diverse and provides a unique opportunity for a highly motivated professional with appropriate communication, teamwork, leadership and decision-making skills to support the Minister and the wider team.
