We’re looking for an exceptional IT Operations Specialist - Surface Observations to help us make a difference to our planet.

This job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

As our IT Operations Specialist - Surface Observations , your starting salary will be £32100.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £33,794.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £36,000.00 over time.

Relocation Assistance may be available.

In addition, you will be paid a market supplement of £2,200 per annum to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until September 2025 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role. 

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £44,696.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Job Purpose:

As a Senior Applications Operations Engineer within the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework, you will be responsible for working with others to help configure and improve the IT systems and capabilities relevant to the operation of the Met Office’s Surface Observing Networks, notably SurfaceNet, the Weather Observations Website (WOW) and other downstream applications. You will configure monitoring applications to ensure that observational data is delivered from the operational networks; diagnose causes for system issues; prioritise technical solutions or remediations; and continually seek opportunities for process optimisation and improvement. 

  • User & Service focus: identify and engage with data users or observations network stakeholders to collate user needs; and establish coherent working practices to underpin the successful delivery of Surface Observations data against service requirements
  • Incident & Problem management: identify and resolve IT-related incidents and problems with reference to ITIL processes, undertaking analysis and investigating patterns and trends to provide solutions and preventative measures
  • Change management: manage and implement changes to Surface data systems, applying change control procedures; work with colleagues to ensure successful implementation of new operational systems and lifecycle activities that support the network and services
  • Continual service improvement: show an awareness of process efficiency and identify opportunities for optimisation, recommending and managing changes to the networks and increasing the use of automated tooling
  • Technical specialism & understanding: assist in technical support activities for Surface data applications and carry out routine maintenance and administration tasks; develop an awareness and understanding of Surface Observations and their data delivery and storage mechanisms; help shape and influence best practice in data delivery and wider collaboration

Person specification

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Proven ability in the support of operational IT applications, using clear communication to provide technical guidance and training to colleagues and customers
  2. Experience of employing ITIL processes in an operational setting, including: prioritising work and dealing with incidents and problems in a structured manner; and applying change control practice to the migration of systems between the development and operational environments
  3. Evidence of working independently to deliver efficiencies, enhancements and continuous service improvement in service delivery to customers in the operational environment.
  4. Experience of working as part of a multi-skilled team to discover and deliver customer requirements to varying timescales and deadlines.
  5. Experience of configuring data delivery, remote networks and enterprise (eg O365) or bespoke applications; knowledge and practical experience of (or willingness to learn) commonly-used coding or scripting languages (e.g. PLSQL, Python) would be an advantage
