We provide a communications service to the department and other Defra group bodies, such as the Environment Agency, the Rural Payments Agency (RPA), Natural England and the Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA).

We are seeking a proactive and creative Internal Communications and Engagement Manager to support the planning and delivery of our core Defra channels.

Job description

This role sits within the ‘hub’ function of the core Defra internal communications team. This small team is responsible for planning, managing and evaluating core Defra’s internal content and channels.

The post holder will:

  • Support the Head of Communications in managing a strategic content plan aligned to business objectives, working with colleagues across Defra to ensure that our content across our channels is planned, timely and relevant
  • Manage the day-day delivery of work in the hub, continually seek ways to improve content and channels, and ensure that publishing standards and deadlines are met
  • Plan and deliver creative campaigns, using engaging multi-media content, to support business objectives
  • Give strategic advice to Defra staff using internal communications and channels
  • Evaluate the impact of our internal communications content and channels in order to continuously improve our performance Produce a monthly analytics dashboard
  • Lead and coach others in writing and accessibility standards, and write, edit and publish high-quality content
  • Manage and develop a Communications and Engagement Officer

Person specification

  • Excellent writing and editing skills and the ability to tailor content for different channels
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Expert understanding of accessibility standards
  • Ability to provide credible and evidence-based advice and support for colleagues on internal communications activities
  • Experience of successfully using data and analytics to improve channels or to design communications campaigns that deliver a high level of staff engagement

Candidates posted to the Marsham Street, London office will require the higher level of CTC clearance. Therefore, confirmation of appointment to the advertised post will be dependent upon successful CTC clearance being confirmed as part of pre-employment checks.

Location

Please be aware that this role(s) will be contractually based in a Defra group workplace/office. The successful candidate is required to carry out all their duties from a UK location, and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time.

Internal (core Defra) employees can apply for this role and choose to remain in their current location or to be based in one of the advertised locations.

All other applicants will be based in one of the advertised locations.Our current office attendance approach requires 60% attendance in Defra group workplaces or off site meetings with partners and customers. This balance provides thriving workplaces to connect with colleagues, as required by their role and business team needs balanced with personal flexibility and choice. 

Travel and subsistence will not be paid for travel to a base office location.

A reserve list may be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.

Salary 

New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
