About the job

Job summary

The Blood Safety, Hepatitis, STI and HIV (BSHSH) Division is the national centre for surveillance of hepatitis, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England. It is within the Public Health Programmes (PHP) Directorate of the Clinical and Public Health (CPH) Group and is based mainly in Colindale, north London. The Division consists of around 100 permanent and project-funded medical, scientific, technical and administrative staff including epidemiologists, public health specialists, microbiologists, virologists, data managers and statisticians. The Division works closely with other Divisions, particularly Immunisation and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases, Health Equity, Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance and Reference and Specialist Microbiology Services and with the Analytics and Data Sciences Directorate and Health Protection Operations. The Division also works in partnership with both national and regional teams in the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), NHS England and NHS Improvement and NHSBT. The Division is also closely involved with the work of the NIHR-funded Health Protection Research Units, which are collaborative ventures involving UKHSA and academia.

The BSHSH Division aims to:

  • Describe trends in the incidence and prevalence of hepatitis, STIs and HIV, especially in important behavioural population sub-groups;
  • Describe trends in the incidence and prevalence of all infections transmissible through blood, tissue and organ donations;
  • Provide national reference and specialist microbiology and virology services, for public health, clinical and diagnostic purposes;
  • Monitor the outputs and effectiveness of hepatitis, STI and HIV prevention activities and programmes and support development of national policy;
  • Provide information for local needs assessment, service commissioning and evaluation, and to guide prevention activities aimed at reducing risk behaviours and interrupting infection transmission, including through blood, organ and tissue donation;
  • Investigate national and uncommon outbreaks, respond to international health alerts, and provide advice on the risks posed;
  • Train those working in blood safety and in hepatitis, STI and HIV surveillance, monitoring and prevention,
  • Lead and contribute to research in hepatitis, STI and HIV epidemiology, diagnostics, and infection prevention and control.

This role is based at the UKHSA Colindale office, 61 Colindale Ave, London NW9 5EQ

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) operates a hybrid working model where business needs allow.  This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month) working at one of UKHSA's locations (Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and London).  Specialist or regional roles will be based at the appropriate UKHSA site. For certain roles, some additional flexibility may be possible, which will be agreed upon with the hiring manager based on individual requirements and business needs.

Responsibilities section:

As an Information Analyst your main responsibilities will include:

Administrative Support for the Division’s Surveillance Systems and Surveys

  • Be the main contact point (via telephone and email) for the collaborating centres, data providers etc.
  • To continually maintain up-to-date contact details of all data reporters.

Maintenance and development of databases

  • Assist with the daily maintenance of surveillance systems.
  • Monitor data submissions to ensure data archive is complete.
  • Process data submissions and ensure all data errors are processed in a timely manner.
  • Undertake data cleaning and validation.

Other duties

  • Assist with analysis of scientific data.
  • Assist the production of annual reports for publication on the .GOV website.
  • Assist in the production of regular reports for the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS, UKHSA Centres, Local Authorities, Drug and Alcohol services and academic institutions.
  • Provide ad hoc data reports as and when required.
  • Organise meetings, prepare and distribute agendas and supporting documentation, and take minutes.
  • Be aware of, and put into practice, all policies and procedures to maintain confidentiality of patient information. To ensure data confidentiality and security in compliance with relevant policies, the Data Protection Act, and other statutory requirements (Caldicott guardians).

Essential Criteria:

Essential

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent experience
  • Use of computers and database software packages
  • Data management, handling, analysis and reporting
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft packages, including Access, Word, PowerPoint and Excel (merge with statistical software point)
  • General office administration such as filing, organising meetings and minute taking
  • Communicate and negotiate accurately, succinctly and in a friendly manner with a wide range of health, laboratory and academic professionals, as well as the general public
  • Prioritise and co-ordinate workload in order to meet tight deadlines
  • Work well on own initiative as well as in a team
  • Sound numeracy skills and a good understanding of data presentation
  • Maintain required levels of confidentiality
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships

Desirable

  • Use of statistical software (e.g. STATA, SPSS, SAS, or R)
  • Working in public health or communicable disease surveillance with the NHS, UKHSA or in sexual health
  • Demonstrate understanding of epidemiological terms

Selection process details

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:
