Job description

The team are responsible for:

  • Considering all categories of representations including claims for protection, further representations, applications for judicial review and interventions from MPs received immediately prior to removal.
  • Supporting charter flights, special operations and complex removals.
  • Supporting legal and policy development to prevent abuse though the submission of representations without merit designed solely to disrupt removal while operating as a safeguard to protect individuals and the Secretary of State Home Department (SSHD) from inappropriate returns occurring.

As part of the Business Support Team within OSCU, you will be responsible for ensuring that casework support activities are completed in an efficient and timely manner. These activities vary, making each week different from the last, but all have the overarching aim of supporting caseworkers and managing and communicating information as effectively as possible. 

Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring and responding to incoming referrals and recording the details, prioritising and escalating as required.
  • Rostering the team’s shifts and evaluating how to best utilise team resources.
  • Recording required system services and serve OSCU decisions.
  • Providing administrative support by undertaking ad-hoc duties, such as filing, ordering stationery and accommodation issues.
  • Assisting with charter flight operations and working collaboratively with key partners including Returns Logistics (RL) charters Team within the agreed timescales.
  • Working closely with the Immigration and Asylum Chamber to address outstanding appeals or Judicial Reviews.
  • Managing, logging and updating information on internal systems such as Atlas and Case Information Database (CID).

The Operational Support and Certification Unit (OSCU) provides extended hours (7:00 am to 9:00 pm weekdays and from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on weekends and public holidays (except Christmas Day)) service to internal partners including UK Visas and Immigration, UK Border Force, and Immigration Enforcement.

Due to these operational hours we are unfortunately unable to accommodate part-time working in this post. Additionally, we act as a direct point of contact for Members of Parliament (MPs) and the courts but are not a public/claimant interaction point. Officers also work a proportion of weekends and bank holidays. The post attracts an Annualised Hours payment which will be confirmed once the successful candidate is selected.

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of the UK Immigration system and case work would be advantageous but is not essential as full training will be provided.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Home Office IT systems such as CID and Atlas.

The sift will be held on the behaviour - Delivering at Pace and the statement of suitability (personal statement). 

The statement of suitability will be scored first for all candidates. Those candidates who achieve the minimum pass score for the statement of suitability, will progress to a further sift where the lead behaviour (Delivering at Pace) will be scored. These candidates will therefore receive a sift score for both elements. Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the statement of suitability will not have their lead behaviour scored and will therefore only receive a sift score for the statement of suitability.

However, if a large number of applications are received, the sift will be conducted on the statement of suitability (personal statement) only.

Sift and Interview dates

For meaningful checks to be carried out, individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time to enable appropriate checks to be carried out and produce a result which provides the required level of assurance. Annual Hours Working Allowance

Annualised Hours Working (AHW) is an attendance system where staff work an agreed number of hours for the year rather than weekly conditioned hours.

You will be required to work flexibly on any day of the week, including weekends, nights, Public Holidays and the Privilege Day, and the hours may vary each week. Attendance may also be subject to change at short notice.

The rate payable under the AHW scheme is driven by business requirements and may vary depending on location.  Your initial rate will be confirmed when you have started in post and will be paid as a percentage of your basic salary.  If a member of staff has agreed an annualised hours arrangement, this does not become a permanent or guaranteed right.  Annualised hours working is subject to changes in operational needs and managers can adjust, cease or suspend it, for operational or performance reasons. Annualised hours agreements are reviewed at least annually.

The annualised hours year runs from 1 April to 31 March.  If an individual begins working on an annualised hours basis part way through the year, they will receive a part-year agreement and the Annualised Hours Allowance will be pro-rated for the remainder of the year to reflect that agreement.

If you transfer to a non-AHW post the requirement to work in accordance with the terms of the AHW policy will also end, and you will move to standard Home Office Terms and Conditions.

The initial rate payable is 18.12%

Age: These are shift working roles and so you must be 18 years or over.

Flexible working

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.  This is a non-contractual arrangement where all employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estates capacity, by Spring 2024.
