We have seven exciting opportunities for Second Year undergraduate Biomedical Science students to gain experience in the Public Health Microbiology Division. The Public Health Microbiology Division is part of UKHSA’s Specialised Microbiology and Laboratories Directorate, along with Operations, Research and Development and Production. It contains reference laboratories that do advanced and specialised microbiology tests, often with rare or unique capabilities or facilities. Reference Units provide expert analysis, advice, risk assessment, teaching, training and innovation for complex microbiological problems in clinical or food settings. They also design and implement national surveillance programmes and outbreak control strategies for new and emerging microbiological threats.

About the Placements:

  • A 50-week placement in either the Bacteriology reference department or virus reference department in one of the different units within the departments
  • A chance to complete the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio, leading to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Attendance at the in-house tutorial programme and at seminars, scientific meetings, conferences and courses held on-site

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Process specimens received and undertake the related tasks in the various sections of the laboratory, leading to the reporting and interpretation of results in accordance with agreed policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Contribute to the proper storage and management of the laboratory specimens
  • Keeping accurate, legible and up-to-date records of work carried out in the laboratory
  • Contribute to routine maintenance of all equipment, which will include high cost, complex equipment requiring calibration and regular maintenance
  • To participate in all mandatory training as required, i.e. fire safety, information governance as well as the in-house tutorial programme
  • Daily duties and responsibilities will vary depending on unit

Essential Criteria:

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 1500 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

Essential

  • Registered on an IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or Healthcare Science (Life Sciences) degree
  • Currently in second year of study
  • Has an interest in microbiology
  • Has an interest in a career as a biomedical scientist
  • Has awareness of the role of the HCPC
  • Has an understanding of the work carried out at UKHSA, Colindale

 Desirable

  •  Familiar with recent developments in medical microbiology
  • Previous work or voluntary experience (of any nature)
  • Able to communicate and convey information, ideas, instructions clearly and concisely
  • Computer literacy: competence in word processing and spread sheet software; database skills

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW 

This competition will involve an interview by video. 

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification. 

Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
