The apprenticeship

We’re seeking motivated self-starters to fill permanent roles.

You’ll have round-the-clock support from managers, coaches, fellow apprentices, and the Data Analyst community. With experienced mentors guiding your journey, you’ll master the latest best practices while forming meaningful connections.

With 20% time reserved for training, you’ll earn while progressing towards completion of an 18-24 month apprenticeship.

In this role you will:

  • You will work as part of the Government Digital and Data profession, working within a Digital & Data environment.
  • Dive into the development of complex and high-profile analytical products.
  • Collaborate with the business to unravel the mysteries of analytical work, ensuring we’re always on the same page.
  • Manipulate multiple data-sets to analyse data and provide insights that will enlighten!
  • Ensure products meet our quality standards.
  • Translate the tech talk into a language everyone can understand.
  • Provide regular progress updates on your analysis, keeping people informed.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

You should have the following:

  • Analysis and synthesis - show an awareness of the need for careful analysis of data to produce clear findings.
  • Data visualisation – be able to use Excel or other software to merge, analyse, visualise, and consolidate data using pivot tables, functions, and charts.
  • Data quality assurance, validation, and linkage - understands basic data issues and be able to check that the data and analysis look right.
  • Communication – be able to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • IT and mathematics – be able to apply your knowledge and experience of IT and mathematical skills, including tools and techniques.
  • Be comfortable learning to use new tools and large datasets.
  • Be able to organise and prioritise your work.
  • Be able to work collaboratively in a team.

Eligibility Criteria:

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Valid passport/birth certificate and NI number
Must have lived in the UK and/or EEA for 3 years prior to apprenticeship start date
Not undertaking another apprenticeship or government funded qualification at the same time

You must also hold one of the following:

Level 3 qualification (apprenticeship/A-levels/BTEC, etc)
OR equivalent work experience (typically two years in a relevant role)
Plus:
5 GCSEs (or other equivalent), including English and Maths at Grade 4 (C) or above – or be willing to complete a level 2 English and Maths functional skills qualification.
Eligibility criteria is set by a 3rd party learning provider, not HMRC.

    Sift and Assessment Centre

    Applicants will be sifted on CVs and personal statements submitted against the speciation above, in particular the essential criteria.

    If we receive a high volume of applications, the sift will be carried out against personal statement only.

    Following the application closing date, you may be invited to an assessment centre. The assessment centre will be a 2-stage process consisting of an interview and a paired/group exercise. This will be delivered virtually via Microsoft Teams. The assessment centre will be conducted by staff from HMRC, focusing on experience and strengths of the candidates.

    Interviews will focus on the candidates’ application, their knowledge, experience and competence, and the essential criteria required. Feedback on applications will only be provided if you attend the assessment centre.

    We may also raise the score required at any stage of the process if we receive a high number of applications.

    Candidates may be required to obtain additional security clearance. The candidates will be unable to take up post until the relevant Security Clearance is obtained.

    Interview

    During the panel interview, your experience will be assessed, you will be asked behaviour-based questions to explore in detail what you are capable of and you will be asked strength-based questions to also explore what you enjoy and your motivations relevant to the job role.

    There is no expectation or requirement for you to prepare for the strengths-based questions in advance of the interview, though you may find it helpful to spend some time reflecting on what you enjoy doing and what you do well.

    Who can start an apprenticeship?

    To start an apprenticeship, you’ll need to be:

    • 16 or over
    • living in England
    • not in full-time education

    You can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school but you’ll need to be 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays to start the apprenticeship.

    Please note if successful you must be 16 or over to undergo the relevant security checks.
