Job description

HM Coastguard Operational Support Team sits within HM Coastguard’s Headquarters and Operational support pillar with staff based at Operations Centres throughout the UK coastline. The team supports HM Coastguard in achieving its six key missions by providing Maritime Operations, Counter Pollution, Coastal Operations, HQ and the wider MCA with administrative and logistical support.

As the role holder, it will be your main duty to collect, clean and interpret data sets to answer specific questions and provide management information to HM Coastguard stakeholders and senior leaders.

In addition you will need to process, interpret and document relevant business processes, services and software within HM Coastguard through analysis of data to ensure business efficiency and identify improvements that can be made. You will gather and manipulate data, identify useful information from it and deliver findings in an accessible way to support strategic business decisions.

It’s an exciting time to join the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. We have a brand-new opportunity for a HM Coastguard Business and Data Analyst to come and join us! There will be lots of opportunity for you to build on existing knowledge and learn new skills whilst liaising with various different stakeholder’s. Using a variety of platforms, you will gather data to enable you to provide a high-quality analysis of data enabling you to inform and support decisions made by operations.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Taking the lead for HMCG to ensure good quality data is collected and collated from HMCG management and operational information sources.
  • Check data for accuracy and present in a usable way.
  • Supporting Operations and senior leadership in the analysis of data to identify trends and risks.
  • Attending and contributing to management meetings to support the effective use of management information within HMCG.
  • Analysing Coastguard incident data to respond to or support other business areas with enquiries, e.g press, FOIs, media, local councils, Water Safety stakeholders, wider MCA and DfT providing comprehensive, customer focused data and information.

Person specification

To be successful in this role, you will have experience of delivering data and business analysis within an operational environment. You will have previously worked with data from a variety of sources and how to connect them together.

You will come to us with experience of working with and manipulating data and will be looking for a role where you can develop and grow your skill set.

Identifying and addressing user needs and building stakeholder relationships comes naturally to you and using applications like Microsoft Power BI is something you are confident with.

You have excellent communication skills and can translate technical language to non-technical people with ease.

 Interviews/assessments are likely to be held w/c 11th March 2024.

This interview could be conducted online via Teams or face to face at one of our offices. Further details will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.
