Job summary

We are currently looking for a Higher Scientist to join our Standards Lifecycle team the Science, Research & Innovation group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a fixed term contract/internal move or temporary promotion basis. This is a grant funded role that has an estimated end date of 1st May 2025. The role will be lab based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

The Science, Research and Innovation Group delivers public health impact, world-leading research innovation, and a unique proposition via an ambitious Science Strategy which will balance innovation against sustainability and affordability. It is divided into 6 sub-Groups, Innovation Accelerator, Clinical Investigations and Trials, Research and Development, Standards Lifecycle, Control Testing and Quality Assurance and Health & Safety.

The Standards Lifecycle function produce the MHRA biological reference materials. Marketed using the NIBSC brand, the Agency is a global leader in the standardisation and control of biological medicines and related diagnostic tests and is responsible for developing and producing over 90% of the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Standards in use around the world to assure the quality of these important products. The function is responsible for the WHO and other categories of Reference Materials and develops them from research and prototype materials through to completed validated protocol including manufacture and distribution.

What’s the role?

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a project in partnership with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to produce WHO reference materials for emerging viruses. This is a lab-based post focused on developing and performing serological and molecular assays for a range of pathogens to characterise reference materials needed to facilitate the comparison of vaccines and diagnostics in early stages of development. 

Job description

Key responsibilities: 

 

-          Work to independently carry out experiments, developing and executing appropriate serological and molecular assays, for the production and characterisation of priority pathogen reference materials.

 

-          Maintain accurate records, analyse data and prepare presentations and written reports to effectively communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.

 

-          Be flexible to contribute to a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment, as required by service orders from CEPI, including underpinning research. 

 

-          Support work of the team through document management and laboratory housekeeping, maintaining a good working knowledge of relevant quality management systems and the health and safety requirements of working within a containment level 2 laboratory.

Person specification

Our successful candidate will have: 

 

-          A BSc degree in a relevant discipline, combined with graduate experience working in a laboratory.

 

-          A proven record of serological assay design and development and the ability to plan and undertake scientific experiments.

 

-          Excellent analytical skills, with experience in analysing and interpreting data for the preparation of scientific reports or presentations.

 

-          The ability to communicate in a straightforward, honest and engaging manner with colleagues and stakeholders, choosing appropriate styles to maximise understanding and impact

 

-          A positive approach to keeping the whole team’s efforts focused on the top priorities. Act promptly to reassess workloads and priorities when there are conflicting demands to maintain performance.
