GLD is a non-ministerial government department, sponsored by the Attorney General. We are headed by the Treasury Solicitor, our Permanent Secretary and employ nearly 3000 people, including over 2000 legal professionals. Our offices include London, Leeds, Bristol, Croydon and Manchester as well as overseas. We provide specialist legal services including Litigation, Employment and Commercial Law as well as advising most Government Departments on the policies and services they deliver.

These are essential to the smooth and efficient running of the Department and provide the foundation to enable GLD to deliver outstanding legal services. About the Knowledge and Innovation Group
The work of the Knowledge & Innovation (K&I) Group is core to all our legal work in GLD.
The K&I Group is a group of lawyers, specialists and administrators whose role is to advance GLD’s Knowledge, Capability and Innovation Strategy (KCI Strategy), which supports all GLD’s broader strategic outcomes and is particularly aligned with the ‘capability’ and ‘professionalise’ outcomes.
The K&I Group’s key areas of responsibility are:
- Legal practice innovation and GLD’s broader grassroots innovation activities.
- Knowledge development and sharing in all its forms both within and across GLD Divisions, with the wider Government Legal Profession (GLP), and with clients.
- Legal Learning across GLD Divisions, with the wider Government Legal Profession (GLP)
- Legal information and library services (including the subscription services (Lexis, etc) we manage on behalf of GLD and the GLP.
These areas of focus require K&I Group colleagues to be very collaborative and outward looking, facilitating and advising communities of practice and on local legal Division activity, as well as driving central initiatives; actively engaging with GLP
colleagues; and pro-actively collaborating with the broader legal sector, government and academia.
The Role
This new permanent Data Analyst role for the K&I Group reflects the development of the Group and the growth of our knowledge services’ portfolio. A data analyst collects, organises and studies data to provide business insight. The role will suit a strongly motivated applicant with proven skills and the ability to drive, support and advise on the effective analysis of, and then the effective provision of knowledge systems data for GLD, the GLP and our clients.
Data is at the heart of everything we do including knowledge, learning and information systems and our work to understand and improve legal processes.
The Analyst’s primary responsibilities will be to support all K&I group activities, to understand how we can help to improve our lawyer’s day-to-day work. To present data in a format which will enable GLD colleagues to understand and identify system user and usage trends and help them plan how GLD knowledge systems can be best used to help deliver quality legal services to our clients,
Using your existing experience in the analysis and presentation of data to advise K&I colleagues how to use data successfully to support business outcomes.
Reporting directly to the Portfolio Manager, the Data Analyst role will be core to the Group’s work and achievement. The Analyst will work closely with colleagues across the Group’s specialist areas. The Analyst will have the opportunity to engage with the Knowledge Communities working in GLD and to engage with other business professional colleagues working in our Change and DDAT teams.
Key responsibilities:
- Use existing experience in applying tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation
- identify, collect, and migrate data to and from a range of systems
- manage, clean, abstract data alongside a range of analytical studies on that data
- manipulate and link different data sets
- summarise and present data and conclusions in the most appropriate format for users
- support and advise K&I colleagues in the collection and presentation of data/analysing survey results in a knowledge sharing capacity for the team to develop effective usage of data
- support K&I colleagues in the development and usage of data for reporting purposes
- support the Programme Manager to enhance management of the portfolio through data analysis
- Developing good relationships with our stakeholders and presenting data in a form which can be easily understood by GLD knowledge communities and others
- Identifying and managing how our systems data is sourced, organised, and stored
- Overseeing data quality assurance, validation, and linkage
- Demonstrating a knowledge of data cleansing and standardisation
- Interpreting requirements and presenting data in a clear and compelling way, using graphical representations and data visualisations
