Job summary

We are currently seeking a scientist to join our team at the Gastrointestinal Bacteria Reference Unit (GBRU). As a post holder, you will play a crucial role in supporting our senior scientists and pathogen leads to ensure that GBRU delivers national and international services across all aspects of the unit’s work. Your responsibilities will involve collaborating with senior staff to ensure that both service and non-service tasks are executed safely, effectively, and efficiently while adhering to our rigorous quality system. This includes conducting molecular assays, conventional microbiological analyses, and proteomic investigations on a diverse range of gastrointestinal bacterial isolates and clinical specimens. Additionally, you will actively participate in research and development activities within the unit.

The Gastrointestinal Bacteria Reference Unit (GBRU), is a National Reference Laboratory which specializes in providing essential services related to hazard group 2 and 3 gastrointestinal and foodborne bacterial pathogens. These include Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens, C. botulinum, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, Helicobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia, and Vibrio species. Operating at local, regional, national, and international levels, GBRU plays a crucial role in mitigating the impact of food, water, and environmentally transmitted illnesses on public health. The unit offers bacterial typing services for national surveillance, investigates outbreaks, and provides specialized microbiological analyses of clinical, food, water, and environmental samples.

This role will be based full time at our UKHSA Colindale Office (61 Colindale Avenue London NW9 5EQ).

Job description

  • To assist in the provision and organisation of safe, timely, high quality and economical CL2 and CL3 reference services within GBRU
  • To undertake DNA-based detection and typing for a range of pathogens with assays and techniques such as real-time polymerase chain reaction and whole genome sequencing (WGS)
  • To analyse genotypic data with relevant software such as BioNumerics and assist in the development and maintenance of the genotypic subtyping databases within the Section.
  • Assist in providing a flexible laboratory response to emergency public health needs including investigation of incidents, of deliberate release of pathogenic organisms and to general investigations of illness as appropriate.
  • Assist with evaluation and implementation of new techniques / methods to the unit that enhance effectiveness of the laboratory work.
  • Writing and updating SOPs and controlled documentation.
  • To provide technical support to GBRU Reference Services as appropriate including adjusting day-to-day work priorities to meet changing demands or emergency requirements.
  • Ensure that health, safety and welfare is an afforded priority over other issues and to demonstrate a commitment to health, safety and welfare regarding self, all staff and visitors in the unit
  • Assist in maintaining a safe working environment within the unit ensuring risk assessments and COSHH are carried out as and when required and safety policy is adhered to
  • Entry of results into LIMS system and liaison with senior staff in sending laboratory reports.

Person specification

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 1000 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the essential criteria (for full details of all essential criteria please refer to the attached job description): 

Essential

  • BSc in Microbiology or relevant biological science or equivalent level of qualification and experience
    Evidence of CPD
  • Experience and knowledge of working in a microbiology laboratory at containment level 2
  • Good experience and knowledge of multiple laboratory techniques including phenotypic and molecular methods
  • Experience in working as part of a team
  • Good understanding of quality assurance principles and procedures
  • Use of micropipettes, sub-culturing organisms - good manual dexterity - work by paying attention to detail

Desirable

  • Post graduate degree in Microbiology
  • Experience and knowledge of working in a microbiology laboratory at containment level 3
  • Experience of writing SOPs
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information, pre-empt and evaluate issues, and recommend an appropriate course of action to address the issues

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW 

This competition will involve an interview by video.
