Job summary

This role sits within the Sport and Gambling Directorate responsible for all aspects of Government sport and gambling policy. Ranging from elite sport and hosting of major events to grassroots participation and promoting diversity and inclusion across the world of sport. 

The Sport Team is responsible for delivering the Government’s recent Get Active sport strategy, as well as governance and co-ordination of sport in the UK. Our team stretches across many policy areas. The sport strategy side of the team focuses on getting more people active and moving towards a more diverse, inclusive and sustainable sector. The elite and international side of the team aims to ensure we continue to support the UK’s thriving professional, Olympic and Paralympic sectors, and plays an active and influential role in international sport policy. All teams aim to do all this within a great working environment where you will learn, develop and be supported to thrive. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead the Sport Participation Team, which sits as part of the wider DCMS Sports Team. The role is focused on setting the strategic direction to get people more physically active, including through sponsoring Sport England, oversight of the National Physical Activity Taskforce and delivering key investment programmes. 

Job description

The role provides the opportunity to lead a dynamic team of four, responsible for driving the strategic direction for sport participation policy across England. 

Key responsibilities include -

  • Delivering the strategic ambitions set out in Get Active. 
  • Sponsorship of Sport England 
  • Management of the National Physical Activity Taskforce
  • Working cross-government to deliver the School Sport Activity Action Plan (SSAAP). 

Significant milestones over the next six months include - 

  • Driving forward key departmental bids at the upcoming Spending Review
  • Shaping and supporting the review of the School Games Organisers network.

The role includes line management of one SEO and two HEOs. With frequent exposure at ministerial and senior leader level. 

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:

Essential requirements:

  • Strategic thinking - being able to set and drive forward big picture policy objectives in terms of increasing participation.
  • Ability to develop evidence based policies. 
  • Strong leadership skills to continue to grow and develop a high performing team.
  • Well developed stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate with and build influential relationships with senior internal and external partners.
  • Calmness under pressure, with the ability to deliver at pace against competing priorities across a broad portfolio.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience of working and / or knowledge of the sport participation sector.
  • Understanding of working across Government Departments and various Government agenda.  
  • Experience of sponsorship, contract management and relationship management of other organisations.
  • Experience of securing funding and / or delivering programmes independently.
