The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Driven by government’s aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO’s purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment, and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.

We are the independent regulator for England’s seas, professionally delivering service-focussed outcomes for our customers.

We are a team of around 540 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

Job description

This is an exciting role because you will be responsible for all aspects of our people and culture work taking forward our 3 C’s people transformation agenda aimed at building capacity, improving capability and culture within MMO. MMO’s 3 C’s people transformation agenda encourages a culture that colleagues want to be a part of, that puts people first and empowers our colleagues to make the most of their skills and experience, supported by the capacity and capability needed to achieve our organisational vision. You will be our most senior HR professional and will need to assess, design and deliver continuous transformation of our people agenda to respond to the dynamic world of change and opportunity we live in. You will achieve this through living and promoting our values so that we always make a difference to the world in the right manner; professionally, apply excellence and with respect and kindness. You will also play an influential role with those we partner with to magnify our work, including with colleagues in Defra group, other operational partners, and among the marine stakeholder community.

We are looking for an engaging people professional who can take MMO colleagues with them in delivering effective cultural change. This will involve working with all our inherently skilled and experienced colleagues, delivering marine management to maximise our collective impact. Reporting to the Director of finance and Resources, and joining our collegiate Leadership Team responsible for managing MMO, you will lead our 3 C’s transformation, the fulfilment of our Values, and the building of MMO as a diverse and inclusive sector leader.

At MMO, we are committed to maximising our influence to solve some of the marine environments most pressing problems and we know we must harness the full power of our People to do so. We are now looking for a new Head of People and Culture to enable us to realise the full individual and collective power of MMO.

MMO’s strength is its people – a wealth of talent, expertise and professionalism. Through our 3Cs work we are investing in our workforce and focussing on making MMO an even better place to work. We will protect, empower and support colleagues through ensuring continuous professional development opportunities, improving their working environments and by having the highest regard for health and safety. We will continuously develop and invest in our pool of talent, continue improving our recruitment and retention processes and provide dedicated support for those managing colleagues through leadership development. Our four MMO values are Accountable, Innovative, Engaging and Inclusive and we promote these through our daily working lives.

Please consider this role if you have the want to apply your passion for people, your professionalism and your sense of fun to really make a difference.
