This role will help HSE tell its story in an effective and efficient way through the media and social media. You’ll protect and promote HSE’s reputation, leading our busy press office, delivering impactful communications activity in support of corporate priorities, and planning and preparing our response to emerging issues. Job description

We are recruiting a Head of News and Social Media in our Communications Branch. This is a key leadership position with responsibility for leading a team of highly-skilled communications professionals delivering a proactive media and social media function for HSE, and working to promote and protect HSE's reputation. You will need to be able demonstrate excellent news judgment, strong leadership skills, the ability to form trusted working relationships with senior leaders, and an understanding of Government Communications.

Frequent travel to HSE offices will be required in this role.

Person specification

    As the most senior media specialist for HSE, you will lead a team of communications specialists to proactively promote the organisation and its work through the media and social media, as well oversee the response to any emerging issues or enquiries that may impact on the work and reputation of HSE.

    You will be responsible for leading HSE’s busy newsdesk operation, balancing the challenges of delivering a reactive, day-to-day news service with proactive activity that promotes HSE's priorities.

    You will lead an efficient, effective social media function working with other communication teams to promote messaging in line with HSE's priorities, producing engaging and creative content that reaches relevant audiences.

    You will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with HSE leaders, central government departments, private offices, special advisers, senior officials, journalists, ministers, and No 10.

    You’ll provide accurate and timely media handling advice and confident briefings, lead on the development and implementation of media handling policies, and constantly horizon-scan related media, political, legislative and regulatory landscapes to ensure media issues are identified early, planned for and actively monitored.

    You will report into the Deputy Director: Head of Communications, and will be key member of the senior leadership team of the communications branch.

    Essential Skills and Criteria

    • Expertise in media handling, proactive PR, and social media management with a record of achievement in delivering measurable communication outcomes to support business objectives.
    • Specialist media handling skills - demonstrable success in the handling of high profile, sensitive issues with potential to damage reputation.
    • Outstanding leadership skills, with evidence of successfully building capability in communications teams and inspiring an effective and efficient media service.
    • Expert ability to build and maintain relationships at the highest levels in order to provide strategic communications direction and advice based on professional expertise, including under the pressure of deadlines.
    • Exceptional influencing skills and the ability manage a variety of competing priorities to deliver effective outcomes.
