Job description

This role sits within the R&D Systems Strategy Team in the Science, Research and Innovation Directorate (SRID) where we lead DSIT’s domestic policy interests in research, development and innovation and their contribution to wider policy goals.

Our work enables the UK’s world-leading researchers and innovators to find solutions to global challenges. It is a fast-paced environment that works with a huge range of national and international partners on some of the most exciting, ground-breaking research and technology in the world.

Metascience is a field of science aiming to study the social practice of science itself, with the aim of improving it. There is a growing worldwide ‘metascience’ movement who have started to appreciate that the quantity of R&D investment is but one of the factors in delivering breakthroughs and innovations: the quality of the investment is also essential.

DSIT’s newly appointed stewardship of the UK’s RDI system gives it a unique opportunity to take a leading role in the metascience movement to ensure that our RDI is the most effective and efficient in the world. In practice, this will involve investing in ‘research into research’ to build a better evidence base of what works when funding research.

You will be the leader of a small Metascience team in the Science, Research and Innovation Directorate, working closely with UKRI, DSIT analysts and external experts to design and implement a new multi-million-pound UK metascience programme.

A strong command of key metascience debates and a working knowledge of experimental design and data analysis is essential to being an ‘intelligent customer’ in this policy area, your role in the team will also require a more classic suite of civil service policy and leadership competencies, including briefing, policy development and delivery, project management, stakeholder engagement and line management.
