This post is based in the View Your Education Data team where we offer high-quality data visualisations and data modelling services.

We oversee the development of data models, which feed into data visualisation and self-service analytical tools for internal and external use by our business stakeholders, customers, ministers, and the wider education sector.

As a Data Engineer, you will be part of a team creating, modernising, and improving existing SQL and Power Bi data models across FE, apprenticeships, skills, and schools, leading on specific strands of work, as well as developing data visualisations.

Job description

Our data engineers innovate to design and deliver data products and services, integrating them into systems and business processes within the department in adherence with data security policies and architecture protocols. 

As a Graduate Data Engineer, you will find innovative ways to improve service operations by continuously challenging approaches for optimum delivery of solutions.

You will be user focused, understanding the importance of data, data management, data quality. You will support the delivery of products to internal and external stakeholders, using agile or other methods of delivery.

You will use your technical skills to design and implement data solutions, from conception to go-live. You will work to develop and deliver automated services that are reliable, scalable, and secure. You will work with a variety of stakeholders in your role such as data architects, senior and lead data engineers, delivery managers, business analysts and data scientists.

Person specification

It is essential you have the following experience and relevant skills:

  • Excellent numerical, IT and analytical skills
  • Ability and versatility to pick up new technologies and languages and integrate them 
  • An interest in understanding in data and a curiosity in business challenges
  • Problem solving mind set and good communication skills
  • Experience implementing data solutions or data models, using programming languages / software such as SQL, C#, Python, R and Power BI.

It is desirable that you have:

  • Experience of using advanced ETL tools, such as the Microsoft stack – T-SQL, SSAS (multi-dimensional and tabular) and SSIS.
  • A degree in a STEM-related subject (preferably Mathematics or Computing related), or relevant certification.
  • Experience of supporting and continuously improving complex enterprise data systems (such as data lakes and data warehouses).

Desirable criteria will only be assessed in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision.

Interview

We will invite candidates successful at sift to a video interview. At the interview, we will ask you questions covering the experience needed for the role.

Terms and conditions of candidates transferring from ALBs and NDPBs 

Bodies that are not accredited by the Civil Service Commission and are not able to advertise at Across Government on Civil Service jobs will be treated as external new starters and will come into DfE on modernised terms and conditions with a salary at the band minimum. 

Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission but do not have civil service status will be offered modernised terms and will not have continuous service recognised for leave or sickness benefits. Salaries should be offered at band minimum, but there is some flexibility where this would cause a detriment to the individual. 

Bodies that are accredited by the Civil Service Commission and do have Civil Service status will be treated as OGD transfers. Staff appointed on lateral transfer will move on to pre-modernised DfE terms (unless they were on modernised terms in their previous organisation). Staff appointed on promotion will move on to modernised DfE terms. Staff will transfer over on their existing salary (on lateral transfer) and any pay above the DfE pay band maximum will be paid as a mark time allowance. Staff moving on promotion will have their salaries calculated using the principles set out in the attached OGD transfer supplementary information.
