The Defence School of Marine Engineering, HMS Sultan, is looking for Specialist Instructional Officers (FRP) to train our future technicians and help them develop the skills needed to maintain the United Kingdom’s maritime security.

This post is advertised for 37 hours per week.

Job description

Do you have the passion to impart your skills and knowledge onto future Military Engineering Technicians, if you do, we need you? The Defence School of Marine Engineering, HMS Sultan is the largest military training establishment in Europe and is responsible for the training and development of military engineering personnel. The successful candidate will be working within the Allied Trades Department alongside a small team of instructional staff. The training syllabus is pre-determined by the Royal Naval Training Authority and designed to impart the skills/knowledge necessary for active service within the armed forces. The role of the successful candidate is to provide both practical and theoretical FRP training within a workshop-based environment.


This position is advertised at 37 hours per week, and in addition to the basic salary listed attracts a £6000 p.a. allowance.

Person specification

Candidates will have served a recognised apprenticeship or relevant alternative period of training within a Fibre Reinforced Plastics / Boatbuilding environment and have gained the appropriate ONC, City and Guilds (part III), BTEC, NVQ or an equivalent level qualification. Applicants who have completed a military apprenticeship plus 5 Years practical experience within the specialisation will be deemed to meet the necessary requirements.
Candidates should have practical experience and knowledge of the following processes:  Polyester/Epoxy Resin Systems, Glass/carbon Cloths, Manufacture & Repair of FRP Structures, Plug/Mould Manufacture.

A good understanding of Microsoft Office and its applications would be a distinct advantage.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

The selection process will include a practical test to assess appropriate skill levels, a multi choice theory exam to assess subject matter knowledge, a short (15 mins) presentation on a subject relative to the post advertised, and a formal interview.

The selection process and assessment is to be completed at HMS Sultan and normally requires a whole working day to accomplish.

Candidates will be required to provide CV details to include job history, qualification details and previous skills and experience.
