Overview of the job
The Probation Equality Team will be responsible for implementing the NPS strategy at divisional level. The Equality Manager will support the Deputy Divisional Director and Probation Head of Equality to plan, develop, implement and review the Divisional equality remit in order to ensure that it conforms to NPS equality strategy. The Equality Manager will adapt the national strategy to respond to the equality challenges/opportunities within the division; ensure equality legislation compliance; and deliver positive outcomes for staff and service users.
Summary
The Equality Manager will interface with Head of Probation Equality & Senior Probation Equality Managers at HMPPS; in order to deliver the NPS Equality Strategy at Divisional level. The Head of Probation equality will provide a national strategic lead and the two national Senior Equality Managers will engage directly with Divisional Equality Managers to advise and be advised on the local picture.
Responsibilities, Activities & Duties
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
Contribute to developing and executing Probation Equality strategy
• Prepare a comprehensive annual equality report specific to the Division that includes equality objectives to inform the divisional business plan. To monitor and improve the inputting of equality data to shape the report and form Divisional equality objectives
• The post holder will be expected to have detailed knowledge and experience within the Probation Service and a sound grasp of the post reform structures. S/he will understand equality in the context of leadership, corporate services, offender management and interventions

• Lead on the development of a Divisional action plan that conforms to the NPS Equality Strategy and contributes to meeting key performance targets and legislative requirements
• Drive the creation of an inclusive ethos that:
• a) lays the ground for responsive and effective engagement with a diversity of service users, and
• b) creates a safe and empowering workplace culture in which staff, with all protected characteristics, are able to thrive and progress
• Advise HR on equality and diversity matters in respect of employment, including monitoring of Employment Tribunal decisions, and participate in consultation and negotiations with trade unions
• Monitor emerging legislation and Employment Tribunal decisions, in order to anticipate and mitigate business and equality compliance risk. Inform and be advised by the corporate Probation equality provision at HMPPS as appropriate
