Job summary

The Land Warfare Centre (LWC) is the primary Army organisation responsible for delivering training and for driving the agile adaptation of the Army. The LWC is closely linked with the rest of the Army and Defence; playing a key role in Defence engagement and international development training. It uses experimentation and lessons to optimise the Army and advise the development of future capabilities. It has a number of operating groups dispersed across the UK and permanent training bases in three other continents where we deliver high quality training. In the same way that operational capabilities must be continually developed to be more effective and efficient, our training capabilities must also evolve.

The Experimental Trials Group oversees the Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) in Bovington look to future concepts, modifications and development of current in-Service platforms.

This role in ATDU leads a small team who assist in the design and development of custom solutions. Whilst a knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) is of benefit, you and your team will carry out the basic manufacture and modification from a task description using appropriate tools and machinery. These will be completed using basic fabrication machines whilst also expanding into 3D printing.

This an opportunity to gain valuable experience and for the right individual, training can be offered, as well as an opportunity to advance in CAD packages. It would be perfect for those wishing to either gain experience putting theory into practice or for an experienced professional wanting a less commercially pressured environment.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.  This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. Job description

Working as the lead of the Engineering Team you will get the opportunity to resolve design issues and assist in the manufacture of specific parts from modification of equipment to engineering drawings.

It is expected that you will maintain acceptable quality standards of service, workmanship and safety within areas of personal control. Assisting in the supervision of staff when required, working as a team to source a solution collaboratively.

You will have input on the designs and manufacture with some excellent equipment available and as an Engineering Team you will complete tasks according to the priority given and within the timescale agreed.

In conjunction with other Engineering Branch members, you will form part of a critical team. Your solutions and valuable contributions have potential to create wide reaching positive trends across the globe.

Person specification

An Engineering Manager you will be expected to be part of the wider team and lean into design and manufacturing challenges. Use of fabrication equipment will be anticipated but there are exciting opportunities to conduct training and courses to fulfil any competency gaps including 3D printing for the right person.

You will be expected to be efficient in the use of materials and other resources whilst maintaining a clean and tidy workplace.

The successful applicant will be obliged to fulfil the basic maintenance of tools and machinery in accordance with regulations including meeting all Health and Safety requirements

Monitoring stocks of raw materials for replenishment will be a necessity as will reporting any building faults or / and maintenance requests to the Works Services Office, whilst recording any progress.

This particular role offers substantial benefits for those with an interest in engineering, who wish to build on their current skill sets. Further opportunities can be gained through mentoring others at appropriate times for the transferring of knowledge.
