Job summary

Team information

The role is integrated into three teams.  The Freight team carries out inspections, investigations, enforcement and liaison with the Freight Operating Companies operating across the GB main line rail network.  The Channel Tunnel Safety Authority and HS1 team regulates the safety of the High Speed 1 route and the Channel Tunnel including passenger services, vehicle shuttles and freight operations.  The Interoperability and Rail Vehicle Engineering team provides rail vehicle engineering expertise to the Freight and HS1/Channel Tunnel teams, and to the rest of ORR.

Job description

Job Purpose

You will provide rail vehicles engineering expertise, support and guidance. You will primarily support the Railway Safety Directorate Freight team and Channel Tunnel Safety Authority, but you will work closely with colleagues across all ORR’s various directorates, the Department for Transport and a wide range of industry stakeholders.  In particular your engineering competence will be supported and mentored by the Interoperability and Rail Vehicle Engineering team.  You will be required to travel, as and when needed, throughout the UK and within Europe. There will be nights away from home and occasionally work will be required during unsocial hours.

As one of His Majesty's Inspectors of Railways you will regulate health and safety for passengers, the workforce, and the public; those who use, operate and maintain Britain’s railways. You will be a warranted health and safety inspector and there will be a training and development programme to help you achieve the necessary inspector competence.
