Job summary

As Great Britain's regulator for the energy industry, Ofgem exists to ensure a safe, secure and sustainable energy supply to British households and businesses.

As External Communications & Stakeholder team leader, you will be responsible for leadership, development, and delivery of communications and engagement activities. You will lead a team who connect directly with a diverse group of stakeholders, including energy suppliers, trade associations and local authorities. You will also use your experience of different communications disciplines to think creatively about how we reach our audiences, including through traditional and social media. 

You will manage a team within the wider Delivery & Schemes communications team, which promotes Ofgem’s role in delivering environmental and social schemes – from insulating the homes of those living in fuel poverty, to helping people install low carbon measures like heat pumps in their homes, to supporting more green energy generation via renewables. 

You will provide professional guidance to the Delivery & Scheme’s board and Senior Leadership team on strategic communication and stakeholder engagement, as well as wider reputational issues. You will be self-motivated and take responsibility for achieving communications and engagement outcomes and enjoy the challenge of a busy and varied leadership role.  

You will represent Delivery and Schemes within the stakeholder communications sub-profession, ensuring they are part of the corporate communications strategy and deliverables. You will be responsible for developing the wider communications team within Delivery and Schemes, reporting to the Head of Communications. You will support with building the team’s knowledge enabling them to achieve their objectives.

Person specification

Key Responsibilities:

  • This is a high-profile role leading a team within the wider Delivery and Schemes communications team, it will be responsible for external engagement for the directorate.
  • Responsibility to represent Delivery and Schemes in the stakeholder sub-profession.
  • Devising and delivering communications and stakeholder engagement strategies for Delivery and Schemes which are aligned with Ofgem’s Corporate Strategy and communications strategy. 
  • Lead the Delivery and Schemes Stakeholder Engagement team building the culture, embedding new ways of working and ensuring they are a valued part of the communications profession and Delivery and Schemes directorate. 
  • Play a leadership role within the wider Communications Profession, including developing and mentoring communications staff from across the organisation and leading multi-disciplinary teams to deliver key projects.
  • The post holder should also have a strong track record of promoting diversity and inclusion through communications and engagement.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of devising and delivering strategic, multichannel communications strategies and plans, preferably in the GCS frameworks [LEAD].
  • Must have a strong track record in thinking strategically and delivering long-term communications and stakeholder engagement to deliver against corporate priorities [LEAD].
  • Advanced skills in both written and oral communication, presentation, negotiation, and collaboration, and a clear track record of campaign delivery.
  • Effective at building strong, trusting, influential and effective relationships at senior levels internally and externally. 

Desirable Criteria

  • Broad working knowledge of the UK’s political/regulatory landscape and the energy industry,
  • Understanding of the importance of EDI and the role of communications and engagement in the EDI strategy.
