Job description

We are looking for a visionary Director of Strategy & Transformation to drive our strategic direction and be at the heart of building our future as a member of our Executive team.

If you are creative and decisive, with strong values and genuine integrity, confident in leading the development and execution of the Environment Agency’s long-term organisational plans and initiatives whilst also manging strategic risks and our organisational reputation. You will provide outstanding leadership and take responsibility for providing strategic direction and advice to the Chair, the Board and its Committees, Executive Directors Team and other Environment Agency groups.

Your role will be fantastically varied, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and drive the successful implementation of strategic initiatives.

You will be a strategic thinker with the ability to translate ideas into tangible outcomes. This will require you to effectively collaborate and influence internally and externally, which are key parts of this role. You will work closely with other public bodies right across the UK and will be able to communicate the Environment Agency’s strategic vision to internal and external stakeholders, fostering alignment and commitment. You will provide outstanding leadership and foster a culture of innovation and adaptability within the organisation.

Person specification

The successful Director of Strategy & Transformation will possess:

  • Deep leadership experience, with an emphasis on brilliant collaboration and teamwork.
  • A strong record of enterprise-wide strategy and transformation delivery, with experience navigating complex stakeholder environments and multiple competing priorities.
  • The ability to collaborate and influence a diverse team of senior leaders, comfortable challenging existing ways of working.
  • The ability to horizon scan, work across multiple stakeholders, both internal and external to the Agency, whilst taking responsibility for our government relations, our board governance and interfacing with our communications function.

Accountable to the Executive Director Strategy, Transformation & Assurance, the CEO, the Environment Agency Board and as a standing member of the Executive Directors Team, the Director of Strategy will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive, expert and enabling strategy and transformation service.
