The Digital Markets Unit (DMU) will host a drop-in session for prospective candidates interested in working for the CMA. Candidates are invited to join a virtual session where the team will explain the work of the DMU and you can hear from existing team members about their experiences. Job description

This exciting opportunity places you at the forefront of promoting greater competition and innovation in vital digital markets, such as online search, social media, app stores, and online marketplaces, directly benefiting people, businesses and the UK economy.

As a Director of Digital Markets, you will lead and contribute to the implementation of the new digital markets competition regime being introduced through the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill, as part of the Digital Markets Unit within the CMA.

Your leadership will be critical in investigating how digital markets work and assessing the extent of current and future market power held by key firms, setting rules for digital firms, monitoring compliance, and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders. You will work closely with the CMA’s Data and Technology Analytics unit to maintain cutting-edge insights into digital markets. Your role will involve horizon-scanning, strategic thinking, and building a culture of continuous improvement within the DMU and the wider CMA. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of digital markets and ensure they operate fairly and efficiently.

·       A proven track record of working in senior policy or project delivery roles and knowledge and an understanding of business, consumer and competition issues in digital markets.

·       Experience of providing strong, inclusive leadership to a growing, busy unit with the ability to lead, develop and inspire multi-disciplinary teams through times of uncertainty and change, offering a compelling vision behind which a team can unite and to promote a culture of respect, equality, diversity and inclusion.  

·       Significant experience building and engaging a network of strategic relationships with businesses and consumers and successfully using these connections to communicate and influence the delivery of priorities, particularly including government(s).

·       Exceptional strategic thinking, proactively managing risks including the ability to deliver complex work while maintaining an awareness of the broader political, economic and international context.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review), ILA assessment and interview.

The sifting dates are w/c 17 June 2024.

Successful candidates at the shortlisting stage will be asked to participate in an Individual Leadership Assessment (ILA) which is a one-to-one psychological assessment of candidates in recruitment and selection for Senior Civil Service (SCS) roles. Candidates will complete a range of questionnaires on-line, the outputs of which are explored during a structured interview of approximately 1-2 hours with an assessor.  The ILA must occur prior to interviews taking place. The assessment does not lead to a pass or fail decision; rather, it is intended to highlight areas of strength and possible concerns which the panel can probe at interview. The ILA  Assessments have been scheduled to take place from 24 June to 05 July 2024.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend an interview.  This will be a 45-60 minute panel interview, where you will be asked behaviour-based and experience questions based on the behaviours and experience specified in the role profile.

Interviews will be held via Microsoft Teams.

You will also be asked to prepare a presentation to deliver at the start of the panel interview/undertake a work based task in advance of your interview.

You will be notified via email to log-in to your Civil Service Account to book your interview slot. You will then be sent an email with full details of your arrangements for interview.

Interviews will be held w/c 8 July 2024.
