Job summary

Digital Forensics Software Engineers within the Advanced Data Acquisition (ADA) team focus on the Agency’s toughest technological challenges.  We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic professionals with an investigative mindset who cannot rest until a problem is solved.

***To be considered, you will need to successfully complete SC Enhanced clearance before commencing the role and achieve DV clearance within the first 12 months in post.***

Job description

On a typical day, you may be required to carry out research and development to defeat the latest device security, engineer new ways to extract data or produce custom wordlists to aid password recovery.  There is only one guarantee; no two days will be the same.

Collaborative working is crucial to success in this specialist field, so you will be encouraged to share your solutions with the wider Digital Forensics community both nationally and internationally, therefore travel throughout the UK and overseas will be necessary.

This role requires individuals to have an active interest in evolving technologies, who can maintain and develop their technical skillset, knowledge and awareness of the rapidly advancing technology and digital forensic landscapes. Person specification

Responsibilities:

  • Research and development into emerging and novel techniques or tools for extracting data from mobile devices, whilst ensuring the integrity of the information obtained; 
  • Maintenance  and enhancement of existing tools;  
  • Develop, deploy and protect sensitive techniques and tactics;
  • Advise upon the use, and disclosure, of sensitive tactics whilst enabling operational activity;
  • Analysis of new operating system features and applications in order to find ways to recover data or security credentials;
  • Static and dynamic reverse engineering, fuzzing and source code review;
  • Gather evidence and intelligence with a proactive approach for criminal investigations; 
  • Collation of custom wordlists and mutation rules in order to maximise the possibility of successful password recovery;
  • Maintain a portfolio of technical competencies in relation to the acquisition of digital data;
  • Effective exhibit management, ensuring evidential continuity and integrity; 
  • Maintain accurate records and reporting for evidential production, including testimony at court as required; 
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the latest techniques; 
  • Incorporate new techniques into the team’s toolset.
  • Foster and enhance relations with partners from across government, academia and industry, leading to collaborative projects.

VETTING REQUIREMENTS SC

The requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Failure to meet the residency requirements will result in your security clearance application being rejected.
