Job summary

Post background

Digital and data delivery and innovation is central to achieving JNCC’s strategy by 2030. The Digital and Data Solutions Team is key within this space, supporting the organisation to generate robust, high-quality data that underpins our projects and functions. The team also supports delivery of a wide range of digital solutions to guide complex thinking and policy setting. The team is made up of five core functions: data protection, information management, data engineering, application development and technical project management. The successful candidate will work alongside another team leader to manage the team and their diverse and dynamic portfolio of work.

There will be opportunities to get involved in exciting work areas including working with cutting edge environmental data such as use of satellite imagery for change detection; designing data pipelines and automation for JNCC’s indicators; and ensuring that the organisation’s information management policies and procedures are fit for the scale and shape of JNCC.

JNCC is now on the midst of a significant period of change to adapt to these opportunities:

  • Improving the efficiency of storing, integrating, and processing large datasets to produce key indicators.
  • Migrating from legacy internal server infrastructure to make much greater use of the cloud for storage and sharing of documents and data. This is partly driven by the cyber security strategy and partly to enable more effective remote working. The work includes improving the use of MS technology to streamline existing corporate processes and governance.
  • The storage of information and data on JNCC’s infrastructure is becoming increasingly siloed and divergent making it very challenging to locate resources across the organisation and ensure appropriate long-term archiving. This is being compounded by the incremental movement to Cloud storage.
  • Continuing to enhance data protection policies and processes to meet imperatives from Defra and ICO.
  • Providing support and assistance to JNCC for the development and implementation of applications and systems

The co-team leaders will have responsibility for overseeing these transformations including managing the structure of the team to enable it to provide a robust service to provide support across these functions into the medium term.
