Job description

The DevOps Team Lead is part of the IT Operations Practice which sits within the Transformation and Technology directorate whose responsibility is for the performance and delivery of all technical infrastructure which, underpins and supports the organisation. It consists of technical teams which provide support, monitor and operate technical solutions. 

The DevOps function is responsible for working with our IT software development teams to support the delivery of the platform and infrastructure for our new micro service applications as part of the digital transformation of our internal and external services. Engineers are responsible for configuration, administration and support of the Web Operations infrastructure using a DevOps methodology across multiple cloud infrastructures, ensuring they are secure, performant, supportable whilst following an agile approach to incremental delivery.

This role is to provide technical leadership for the Web Operations team providing technical oversight and direction. They will engage with other Technical Leads, Delivery Leads, Service Managers and Architects to deliver solutions to agreed designs, contributing to business-as-usual activities, work packages and strategic planning. 

The role holder will take forward technical consolidation and/or improvement activities providing guidance and leadership to technicians within the IT Operations Practice and wider, whilst also working across the Transformation and Technology directorate to support and deliver solutions in line with the Technology and Business Strategies.

The DevOps team lead manages of a team of DevOps engineers, who are responsible for improving the platform consisting of open source technologies split between AWS and on-premise. Key technologies used include Kubernetes, Puppet, Terraform, Ansible, RabbitMQ and Postgres.

Person specification

To be successful in this role you will hold a qualification in Information Technology or a related area (Degree Level or equivalent) and/or experience in an IT field.

You will have experience of providing technical leadership and support within a team of DevOps Engineers and experience of line management and career development of junior members of teams.

You will have familiarity with at least one programming or scripting language such as Ruby, Java, Python, Javascript, Go, Bash.

You will have experience of DevOps working practices of Continuous Integration. Continuous Delivery and the sue of version control (Git and GitLab CI).

You will also have experience of working in an agile environment building, deploying, supporting, and operating cloud applications (in particular AWS).

Please note that due to the nature of the role, you will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. Occasional travel will be necessary to other HM Land Registry Offices with less frequent overnight stays.

This role does also require occasional planned out of hours working in order to deal with IT changes and maintenance and may include participation in an on-call rota.

This role is part of the Government Digital and Data Profession and may attract an additional supplement. The amount is the result of a capability assessment which will be determined during the application and interview process to assess your capability level.
