Job description

We would look for you to join us in September 2024 with your apprenticeship training beginning shortly afterwards. You would have 1 day per week dedicated to your 20% off the job training.

Working towards the level 4 DevOps Engineer standard apprenticeship, the training will be delivered as effectively as possible for your learning style possibly including online as well as self-study, so candidates need to have a passion for their own development as well as be committed to the training and opportunities available.

You will be managed by one line manager and have one mentor to offer further support. In addition to the formal training with a registered training provider, you will also have in house training and on the job experience.

You will have the opportunity to work with a team on activities related to your study, allowing you to develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours in this occupation whilst contributing to Met Office aims.

Before applying, we recommend you consider if these delivery methods suit your learner needs along with whether you feel you are committed to your own development and training, as this element forms a significant aspect of a modern apprenticeship.

The MetDB (Meteorological Database) team support and maintain a system for storing weather data, developed using Fortran and C alongside some Python scripts. These data are stored and made available on request for many of the Met Office data processing systems, resulting in products and services to the public and our customers.

As an apprentice DevOps Engineer - MetDB team, your key responsibilities are:

  • Work as part of the team, to ensure that our service delivery targets are achieved.
  • Monitoring the system and providing solutions to any identified issues.
  • Working alongside other Met Office teams to help support and improve the service.
  • Developing solutions to allow storage and retrieval of data for Met Office systems, which require access to this weather information.
