Job summary

This role carries delegated authority to manage work activities in a designated work area safely, securely, sustainably and resiliently at all times for all users, contractors and visitors. The deputy WPM role supports the WPM in providing the key interface between the setting of work requirements and the implementation into a facility or work area.

This role is for a cross-facility engineering capability. The deputy WPM and WPM`s will need to liaise with the construction team and end users to ensure that the facilities are fit for purpose and all health and safety documentation is in place.

Note: A work area may be an office, laboratory, workshop, storage area, building, iso-container, range (or part of a range), magazine or facility as deemed appropriate.

Job description

In this role you will support the WPM in fulfilling duties listed below;

  • Allocate appropriate space for work activities within a work area to operational users and ensure that the allocated space is fit for purpose;
  • Ensure a safe and secure system of work within the allocated work place by fulfilling the WPM H&S roles and responsibilities outlined. Key working interfaces with other roles at Dstl are mapped here and the ‘Working Safely at Dstl’ process to achieve the Safe and Secure system of work
  • Assist with the Managing of the workplace to ensure that the requirements of the safe system of work can be met;
  • Verify with the user that the planned work can be completed within the defined operating envelope for the facility;
  • Agree any proposed changes to the planned activities within the workplace consulting with the FM first if the proposed changes exceed the agreed defined operating envelope and keep the FM informed of the hazard profile of the work place
  • Stop any work or activity considered to be unsafe, outside of the operating envelope, deny access to the work place when appropriate and notify the relevant line managers, FM, work place users and project managers immediately
  • Gain assurance that all work place users and visitors are competent to work in accordance with the safe systems of work and SRAs in place to complete the activities

Person specification

We are looking for someone who has:

  • The ability to manage the operations within a designated work area, inside the parameters defined by the WPM and Facility Manager (FM);
  • The ability to manage the hazards and risks arising from the activities undertaken to ensure compliance with Dstl Policy, relevant legislative and regulatory requirements – through validating and implementing suitable Safety Risk Assessments (SRAs) with delivery teams;
  • The ability to keep the WPM and FM informed of the hazards in the workplace and any changes to the hazard profile as a result of operations and activities
  • The ability to assure compliance of all non-fixed assets imported into the work place and to ensure they remain fit for purpose;
  • The ability to act as the point of contact for activities within the work place for Health, Safety, Environmental and Security issues.


Essential Qualifications

·         Hold CAT B  Driving licence to travel between workplaces

·         Hold or willing to undertake relevant safety qualification

·         Ability and willingness to complete the Dstl Learning Journey for Workplace Managers
