Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the Immigration Enforcement directly working with the Director General of Immigration Enforcement and holding a key role in his Private Office. 

You will be responsible for supporting the Director General on a daily basis to deliver their key priorities. The successful candidates should be willing to act on their own initiative and enjoy variety. They will need to be able to take the initiative in resolving problems and working out the best ways of meeting the needs of Director General and Chief of Staff they are supporting.

You will need to be flexible, dynamic and proactive as you will be working with the wider business to implement changes to the organisation providing guidance and direction to senior managers. 

You should have strong relationship building skills, the ability to prioritise and organise, adaptability and excellent written and verbal communication skills and you should be able to engage with colleagues at all levels.

You can expect an exciting, fast-paced and varied job, as you provide support to the Director General.

You will need to be comfortable working reactively and proactively across a number of varied issues.

Due to the nature of the role / work this post is only available on a full-time basis, is office-based, and you will work from our 2 Marsham Street Office in London.

There is no shift working requirement, and therefore no AHW/AHA allowance available for this role.

Person specification

  • You will be responsible for the provision of high-quality support to the Director General Immigration Enforcement alongside the Private Secretary and Diary Manager. The role reports directly into the Director General’s Private Secretary,

Duties will include but not restricted to:

  • Diary Management in the absence of the Diary Manager.
  • Deputising for the Private Secretary when required.
  • Working closely with the Immigration Enforcement DG’s Chief of Staff, Private Secretary, and other Private offices/Business Support teams to ensure a seamless and efficient team approach DG group’s business. 
  • Acting as a source of advice for the Director General on a range of issues, collating best available information and distilling into succinct, user-friendly briefing and other materials. 
  • Commissioning briefings, returns or drawing attention to critical information in email correspondence in a timely way. 
  • Provide support which can include taking minutes of meetings, inbox management or monitoring progress of actions for the Director General in any work they lead. 
  • Organising and on occasion accompanying the Director General on visits and maintaining a programme of visits.
  • Drafting and responding to correspondence for Director General as required.

Essential Criteria

You will need to be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly within a team dynamic, often to short deadlines to achieve common goals, maintaining a high level of service whilst continuing to deliver efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Awareness of current and emerging political and illegal migration policy issues, direct experience in this area is not essential.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills (both verbal and written). 
  • Confidence to engage personally on a daily basis with the department’s most senior leaders, including Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, Directors General.
  • Ability to build strong and lasting relationships with working-level and senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent judgement and approach to situations, tasks and problems, and a self-starter who can work independently.
  • Ability to quickly but effectively deliver to tight deadlines, whilst remaining professional in a pressured environment.

The sift will be held on the Lead behaviour Communicating and Influencing and the statement of suitability (personal statement). The CV will not be scored.

The statement of suitability will be scored first for all candidates. Those candidates who achieve the minimum pass score for the statement of suitability, will progress to a further sift where the Lead behaviour Communicating and Influencing will be scored. These candidates will therefore receive a sift score for both elements. Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the statement of suitability will not have their Lead behaviour scored and will therefore only receive a sift score for the statement of suitability.
