About the job

Job summary

You will lead a growing team and be part of the wider SRD leadership team. The post requires senior engagement within DBT, across government and with a range of external stakeholders including business groups and regulators. You will lead on the third ‘pillar’ of regulation – the landscape of independent regulators (the other two pillars being the Stock of regulation on the statute book, and the flow of new regulations via the Better Regulation Framework). In particular, this role leads cross-government work on economic regulation.

Job description

You will be responsible for the following; 

  • Advising Ministers on appropriate reforms to economic regulation and responding to a public consultation on next steps
  • Engaging with sponsoring departments of economic regulators to ensure that cross-cutting reforms are dovetailed with individual departments’ work  
  • Engaging with HMT and Cabinet Office and the Office for Investment to ensure that reforms improve the UK investment climate
  • Leading market analysis to ensure that reforms are fully evidence-based
  • Leading the directorate’s corporate support team

Essential Criteria

  • Exceptional leadership skills, with an ability to build, motivate and inspire teams through periods of ambiguity, comfortable working in a complex environment and across organisation boundaries to deliver outcomes. Proactive in contributing to leadership of broader Directorate and Group
  • Strategic thinker, able to spot interdependencies and opportunities in the bigger picture and distil complex ideas into straight-forward outcome-focussed approaches
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective partnerships with a broad range of senior stakeholders and the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly to a variety of audiences, including Ministers and international stakeholders
  • Strong policy delivery and use of evidence skills, comfortable with drawing on a wide range of qualitative and quantitative sources to inform consideration and lead by example in a better regulation approach to policy making and delivery
  • Track record of delivering at pace, leading teams to overcome obstacles and achieve timely outcome-focussed delivery

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience and understanding of regulatory issues
