Job summary

Are you looking for a new and exciting challenge in engineering and have experience of how systems need to be managed and protected in using the electromagnetic spectrum? If so, we are looking for a capable and motivated engineer to join the Defence Electromagnetic Authority (DEMA). This role will involve the management of the Electromagnetic Spectrum for both Military and Civilian frequency bands.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.  This is a non-contractual arrangement where all employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estates capacity.  Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance. Job description

As part of Defence Digital the Defence Electromagnetic Authority (DEMA) delivers cutting-edge services to the Defence enterprise to enable and assure the use of the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

This is a role that is part of a team responsible for providing advice and guidance to project teams and spectrum management support which includes advice on interference resolution to military operations, exercises, and technical trials of Spectrum Dependant Systems (SDS) in the UK. The incumbent would need to have or be able to develop technical knowledge of military SDS, including communications and non-communications equipment’s, an understanding of the structure of the Battle-space Spectrum Management (BSM) at NATO, Combined, National, Joint and single service levels, an awareness of the Acquisition Operating Framework (AOF) including the relevant engagement point during a project procurement lifecycle. The role provides reach-back support to UK based events, such as operations, exercises, and ship port visits therefore on occasions will be required to provide out of hours support.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide DEMA EM Manage lead on Projects as tasked.
  • Process Frequency clearance requests to meet customer demand to ensure that requests are adequate and appropriate to use the EMS.
  • Support Interference investigations as appropriate, assisting to resolve interference reports and working with the wider DEMA team as appropriate.
  • Be innovative around working practices and proactively explore alternative methods of delivering Spectrum solutions.
  • Represent a common DEMA approach to the customer.
  • Support all Spectrum Team disciplines as required.
  • Support development in use of the EMS, including but not limited to, supporting development of a recognised EM/Common Operating Picture to assist Front Line Commands.
  • Take on responsibilities of the Spectrum Manager when required for the duration of specific tasks.

Essential Criteria

  • Has a good understanding of the Electromagnetic Spectrum and frequency allocation;
  • Has good communication skills and a good use of IT Skills;
  • Works well in a team, including areas outside their immediate area;
  • A well organised individual that is keen to develop and learn;
  • Good oral & written skills (Inc. Technical report writing, verbal briefing and presenting)
