Job summary

The Workplace Transformation People Impacts Team forms part of the Workplace Transformation Programme (WTP) and works closely with People and Capability, Corporate Transformation and Estates colleagues on people issues.

This is a critical role within Management Information (MI) and Data Team sitting in the Workplace Transformation People Impacts Team.  The MI and Data Team is responsible for tracking all people activity across Workplace Transformation, utilising a bespoke digital solution, and reporting to WTP Directors, Directors General and Ministers, along with other senior leaders and key stakeholders.

The MI and Data Team provides a professional, standardised and ad-hoc MI reporting, analytical and MI development function for our key stakeholders.

The post holder will be responsible for the administration and management of our People Database which holds, tracks, and monitors all people related data for the Programme. Job description

As Data Manager you will be responsible for: 

  • Administration and management of the People Database which holds, tracks, and monitors all people related data for the Programme; providing manual updates and interventions where required to ensure data is accurate and acting as a first point of contact for queries relating to the database and the information held within it.  
  • Delivering a specified and agreed suite of MI reports and data/trend analysis to meet internal and external reporting requirements to agreed time and quality deadlines.
  • Supporting delivery of the programme MI and Data Strategy and offer.  
  • Developing/increasing the effective and innovative use of data to provide insight, measurement and evaluation that support the delivery of our work whilst demonstrating awareness of the links and interactions between all components and building shared understanding and capability to use data effectively.  
  • Contributing to the development of systems (specifically PowerBI) to gather data, insight, and evidence for reporting on dashboards, scorecards, and metrics, as required, and presenting this often-complex data and analysis in a professional and engaging format to drive effective decision making. 
  • Managing, maintaining, and using spreadsheets, data, and metrics to ensure data is available, accessible and supports decision making.
  • Maintaining customer relationships, seeking feedback, and contributing to the continuous improvement of the specification, design, and presentation of MI reports to meet business need.   

Specific data management responsibilities include: 

  • Identifying, collecting, and migrating data to and from a range of systems.  
  • Managing, cleaning and quality assuring data to ensure it is “analysis” ready.  
  • Manipulating and linking different data sets as required. 
  • Assisting with data quality checking and cleaning.  
  • Applying tools and techniques for data analysis, data visualisation (including use of BI tools). Presenting data and conclusions logically and concisely in the most appropriate format. 
  • Summarising and presenting the results of data analysis to a range of customers, making recommendations.  
  • Interpreting and applying relevant data information security standards, policies, and procedures to data.  
  • Contribution to and/or keeping the Location Strategy up to date.

Person specification

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate success in the following essential areas:  

  • Excellent knowledge and skills in Microsoft Excel and other data management techniques. (Lead Criteria).  
  • Demonstrable skills in presenting complex information in either Word or PowerPoint, using visually appealing infographics to communicate with impact. (Desirable). 
  • Experience of using PowerBI as a reporting tool, along with training and experience as a PowerBI report developer (Desirable). 
  • The ability to deliver the data and MI needed, including at senior stakeholder level, to provide evidence for key decision making.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as part of the MI team to ensure key activity is delivered in a timely, effective manner, often to tight deadlines.  
  • Experience of managing and maintaining large data sets preferable.
  • Experience of managing and maintaining large digital databases preferable.

Hybrid Working

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home.  This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

The interview 

This will consist of a live video interview conducted over MS Teams which should take approximately between 45 - 60 minutes.

The interview will also be comprised of an analytical exercise to assess the ability to analyse data. 
 
This will be a Blended Interview where you will be asked a mixture of Behaviour and Strength questions. A Blended interview aims to be more of a conversation at interview offering a more inclusive approach. The Strength and Behaviour based questioning explores what the candidate can and has done, but also their potential. 

The Behaviours tested during the interview stage will be:

  • Making Effective Decisions

To help you prepare and settled into the interview you will be sent the behaviour questions and analytical exercise in advance, 5 days prior to your interview. These should be treated as confidential and not shared.
