This new service is building Defra group’s data science community, analytical skills and capability. The DASH platform provides access to data and analytical tooling. The platform service supports and enables adoption and use of the platform by analysts and scientists across Defra group.

Job description

Do you want to drive IT change which delivers transformative change to citizens in key areas such as Sustainability, Farming and Key Environmental protection areas?

The Data Delivery & Exploitation team within DDTS is looking for a DASH Platform Service Manager.

The DASH platform is a data and analytics platform hosted in Azure. It provides data and analytical capabilities to users across Defra group. Using services including Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Virtual Desktops, Power BI and Posit Connect.

In Defra you will be at the heart of the new service. You will manage the multi-disciplinary teams delivering data and platform services. Fostering productive relationships with end users and different stakeholders to meet the diverse needs of users across Defra group. Stakeholders include partners in Science and Analysis Group, DDAT professionals and third parties.

In this role you will manage the DASH platform service and associated processes. This includes service readiness, service transition and the delivery of data and platform services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team and ensure adequate capacity and capability, to support and manage the needs of a growing user community
  • Work with the DASH training and enablement team to drive adoption and use of the platform
  • Represent the DASH platform service and act as an escalation point for users
  • Own service readiness and transition, developing the DASH service to support new developments
  • Define, deliver and maintain fit for purpose support processes and artefacts including request, incident, problem and change management
  • Ensure platform support processes are owned and maturing
  • Manage delivery of activity to source and make data available in the DASH platform

Skills and experience

  • Proactive, organised and collaborative. Communicating and working effectively with end users and stakeholders to develop and deliver a high-quality responsive DASH platform service
  • Strategic thinking to provide the best service for the end user. Bringing insight and expertise into how user needs have changed over time to ensure they're met by the service
  • You understand the capabilities and services offered by data analytics platforms to business problems
  • Experience in leading investigative work. Identifying opportunities and analyse a range of information to recommend improvements to service delivery
  • Ability to take accountability for issues and problems that occur and proactively manage your service to achieve excellent user outcomes
  • You can own the design and implementation of service strategy. Defining the direction of strategies, policies and processes to ensure business requirements are met
  • Understanding and planning for the impact of new developments to your service and emerging trends

    Location

    Please be aware that this role(s) will be contractually based in a Defra group workplace/office. The successful candidate is required to carry out all their duties from a UK location, and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time.

    Candidates applying for these roles will be based at one of the Defra hubs as advertised.  

    For information, our core Defra hub locations are:

    • York – the Kings Pool
    • Newcastle – Lancaster House
    • Bristol – Horizon House (Please note that space at this office is limited and it may not be possible for all Policy roles to be recruited to this location)

    All other applicants will be based in one of the advertised locations.Our current office attendance approach requires 60% attendance in Defra group workplaces or off site meetings with partners and customers.     Travel and subsistence will not be paid for travel to a base office location.

    A reserve list may be held for a period of 12 months from which further appointments can be made.

    Merit Lists

    Salary 

    New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
