About the job

Job summary

Investigations is the core crime fighting capability of the NCA. We take an intelligence-led approach and concentrate on tackling the criminals and risks to the public which are beyond the capability or capacity of other law enforcement bodies.

The Investigations Directorate provides a flexible, shared operational capability, designed to maximise the impact of the UK's collective resources against serious and organised crime, and in specialist support of major crime. Our teams respond to a broad range of threats, many of which also remain a responsibility for police forces and other agencies as well as private industry.

Our teams lead investigations across the Serious and Organised Crime landscape, for example: Organised Immigration Crime, Illicit Finance, Modern Day Slavery and Human Trafficking, Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation, Fraud, Firearms, Drugs, Anti-Kidnap and Extortion, Professional Enablers and Money Laundering. The teams provide a national service of specialist investigative skills and expertise to support major crime investigations conducted by police forces, such as abduction, serial sexual crime and no body murder.

We are focused on dismantling the highest harm organised crime groups and networks as we erode the profit motive associated with serious and organised crime.

Job description

Major Crime Investigative Support provides law enforcement with operational information, advice and support in relation to major crime and vulnerable and intimated witnesses. The Crime Teams' primary focus is to support investigations through both written and verbal advice, investigative suggestions and, where required, access to the deployable resources of the National Advisers/Specialists.

The post holder will mainly support front line officers investigating major crime by discussing their requirements and offering potential investigative suggestions including key and current legislation, policy and published guidance; tactical options and evidential opportunities; established and/or emerging good practice and their own knowledge/experience.  In addition, the post holder will provide in-depth advice and guidance on a range of forensic specialists/experts identified from the NCAs’ Experts Advisers Database (EAD), with the objective of adding value to a criminal investigation and maximising opportunities to assist internal and external partners, in accordance with current, relevant legislation.

***To be considered, you will need to successfully complete SC Enhanced clearance before commencing the role***

Person specification

The Crime Team provides a single point of contact for police forces and law enforcement agencies.

Main Responsibilities:

  • The post holder can expect to receive a large number of referrals from law enforcement partners seeking investigative support across a variety of disciplines. They will draw on their investigative experience and knowledge to support the investigation, providing investigative suggestions, if relevant.
  • The post holder will be expected to provide written and verbal advice, and good practice.  They also manage the Experts Advisers Database (EAD) which is used to source and identify forensic experts/specialists who can potentially add value to a law enforcement investigation.
  • The EAD covers a broad range of expertise from Accountants, Forensic Artists, Anthropologists, CCTV & Audio Enhancement Companies, Vehicle ID, Fire investigation, Forensic Linguists, Psychiatrists and Psychologists, Gait analysis, Firearms, Search, GPS, Marine Investigation, Psychopharmacology, Wildlife, Animal Pathology including behaviour and Use of Force, for example.
  • They also have access to the deployable resources of the Major Crime Investigative Support team and their specialists for the investigation of murder, no body murder, rape, abduction, suspicious missing persons, and series and serious sexual offences.
