Job summary

At the Government Digital Service (GDS), our mission is to build a simple, joined-up and personalised experience of government for everyone. Job description

As the Creative Writer you’ll:

  • work closely with people across GDS, Cabinet office and the wider government, to help them communicate what the organisation does, how it does it, and why it does it compellingly, for both internal and external audiences
  • authoring and editing blog posts, presentations and articles on commission for senior leaders across GDS along with identifying and writing key stories about digital transformation work happening in GDS and across government
  • manage the tone of voice for the wider organisation.  
  • update key messages, soundbites and marketing messaging as needed externally and internally
  • creatively bring ideas to life for marketing materials and events in line with the GDS messaging and brand 
  • work with our filmmaker to create scripts and storyboards for our films and conduct interviews
  • be copywriting and/or editing for some marketing materials as needed while ensuring all creative and marketing assets are produced to time, budget and are continually evaluated against agreed objectives

Person specification

We’re interested in people who:

  • are confident in their creative abilities and have extensive experience with copywriting to distill complex messages
  • can tell compelling stories that resonate with different audiences, with a proven ability to quickly comprehend information about new topics, and produce content based on that information
  • can lead and contribute to creative campaigns, presentations, digital, print, and film
  • are confident in building relationships and collaborating with different people across GDS and other relevant organisations to develop and pitch original content ideas 
  • have experience working with agencies or creative specialists to supplement an internal team to prioritise work and deliver to changing deadlines
  • are experienced with content management systems, particularly Wordpress

GDS offers hybrid working for all employees. This means that everyone does some working from home and also spends some time in their local office. You’ll agree to your hybrid working arrangement with your line manager in line with your preferences and business needs.

Selection process details

The standard selection process for roles at GDS consists of:

  • a simple application screening process - We only ask for a CV and cover letter of up to 750 words. Important tip - please ensure that your cover letter includes how you meet the skills and experience listed in the “person specification” section above
  • a 60-minute video interview

In the event we receive a high number of applications, we will conduct an initial sift on the lead criteria which is:

  • confidence in creative abilities and extensive experience with copywriting to distill complex messages

Depending on how many applications we get, there might also be an extra stage before the video interview, for example, a phone interview or a technical exercise.

In the Civil Service, we use Success Profiles to evaluate your skills and ability.
