Job summary

We are currently looking for a Head of Observational Research to join our Clinical Practice Research Datalink team in the Safety and Surveillance group.

 

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.  

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 4 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 8 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.

The Safety and Surveillance Group brings together into a single integrated structure devices and medicines safety expertise with enforcement capabilities. These functions will be supported by our data and evidence generating capabilities complementing our signal generating capabilities produced via the new Safety Connect System.

Part of the Safety and Surveillance group, The Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), with support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), is the UK’s preeminent research service providing access to anonymised NHS data for research. In addition to supporting high quality observational research, CPRD has developed world leading services based on using real world data to support clinical trials and interventional studies.

Job description

What’s the role?

The Head of Observational Research role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the UK Government’s premier data-driven research service. This role is a key leadership position within CPRD, as part of the CPRD Senior Management Team providing strategic direction to CPRD and research leadership to the observational research team which comprises circa 22 staff. The post holder will be responsible for the development and delivery of observational research tools and value-added data products; ensuring efficient delivery of high quality research services; support regulatory science and the Agency’s product and drug vigilance function; support the development of key technology infrastructure projects by providing a research perspective; supporting CPRD’s interventional research services; establish research collaborations with the external research community to advance CPRD’s strategic aims; strengthen CPRD’s research expertise; and work as part of CPRD’s senior management team (SMT) to develop and implement strategy as well as deliver shared organisational goals.

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Deliver a world leading observational research service
  • Support the use of CPRD data to improve the Agency’s vigilance and surveillance functions
  • Develop CPRD’s research capability and partnerships and contribute to CPRD’s strategic development
  • Leadership and people management

 

Person specification

Our successful candidate will: 

  • Have a PhD in epidemiology, statistics, data science or relevant public health research discipline
  • Be a strong and inclusive corporate and team leader, confident in people leadership with the ability to empower and motivate others in a dynamic environment
  • Be a scientific expert with a proven track record in epidemiological or public health research analysing large health data sets, with a history of first author publications.
  • Have a demonstrable record of being an internationally recognised research leader in real world data research and be experienced in statistical techniques and study design.
  • Have highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to build excellent relationships and networks with key stakeholders across organisational boundaries
