Job summary

We’re looking for an exceptional Corporate Risk Manager to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Corporate Risk Manager, we require you to be on site at our Exeter HQ at least once a week. There may be times when the role will require you to work from HQ more frequently, so some flexibility is required. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you'd prefer.  

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 32 hours per week.  Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.

As our Corporate Risk Manager, your starting salary will be £49149.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £52799.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £56738.00 over time.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £67622.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Job description

Job Purpose:

The purpose of the role of Corporate Risk Manager is to lead the delivery of the risk management framework and develop organisational insight by maintaining strategic oversight of the organisational risk profile. Regular contact and consultancy services are provided to senior leaders across the organisation to support organisational improvement.

Specific accountabilities are:

  • Lead on the development and regular review of the Met Office’s approach to Risk, Issues and Opportunity management, taking account of industry and government best practice and the outcome of audits, ensuring clear policies, procedures and guidance are regularly updated.
  • Ensure that corporate level risks are identified, managed and mitigated through 1-1’s with Directors and their Senior Leadership Teams (SLT), ensuring these are set in the context of the overall risk appetite of the organisation and its strategy.
  • Report progress on risk identification and mitigation at corporate and departmental level to the Met Office Board, Audit Committee, Executive, Directorate SLT and Committee meetings, challenging areas of weakness and suggesting corrective action, including the facilitation of risk deep dives to the Executive and senior management covering risk appetite, horizon scanning, and risk interdependencies.
  • Work with the organisation’s P3M risk specialists to ensure Programme, Project and Corporate Investment Appraisal risks are reviewed, identified effectively with suitable mitigation actions, and are tracked and escalated appropriately.
  • Liaise directly with Directorate risk coordinators to assist with risk identification within BaU and Operational teams and provide guidance on capturing, reporting and the escalating of risks when necessary.
  • Provide corporate training, advice and mentoring to all areas of the organisation on risk, issues, and ensure appropriate communication channels, comms sites and risk management tools are in place to empower staff to deliver the risk management framework.
  • Work with the OCEO management team to ensure the organisation’s assurance framework is robust, joined-up and fit for purpose and supportive of the corporate strategy and objectives.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Analytical skills and logical thinking to identify, appraise and propose mitigations to risks and opportunities across the business.
  2. Personal drive, motivation and initiative to plan and manage own workload, meet deadlines and lead risk processes.
  3. Strong report writing and verbal presentation skills for presenting to the Exec Board, Audit Committee and MO Board and to provide guidance and training across the business.
  4. Strong relationship skills to liaise with risk owners, programme leads, directors and senior leadership around the organisation and promote risk culture.
  5. Risk management experience, skills and training/qualifications and/or project management, business analysis and related experience.
  6. IT skills to collate, present, and disseminate risk information.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Understanding of governance, controls and assurance frameworks.
  2. Understanding of business cases, financial analysis and benefits management.
