The Department of Health and Social Care Media Relations team is an award-winning operation, recognised for its work on crisis communications, evaluation, insight, and partnership working.

The role holder will form an integral part of the Communications Team, supporting on the tactical and strategic planning and scheduling of DHSC media relations activity to ensure it is coherent, co-ordinated and supports the department’s communications and policy priorities.

Job description

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Working in the ‘Planning and Arm’s Length Bodies’ team to offer professional communications advice on media relations planning to ministers, special advisors, senior officials and No10.
  • Reporting to the Senior Communications Planner, you will advise on all aspects of scheduling, timing, and broader presentation of the department’s key activity. This includes major announcements, ministerial speeches or visits, media interviews and ALB comms activity.
  • Work with the departments ALBs, building relationships, looking for creative communications opportunities and gridding their communications activity.
  • Work closely with the DHSC Strategic Communications team to coordinate the department’s longer-term communications activity and priorities.
  • Establishing, developing, and nurturing relationships with other Whitehall departments including No10, a network of ALB planners, departmental officials, private offices, and Parliamentary colleagues, to deliver effective planning and scheduling of media relations activity.
  • Treating all colleagues and stakeholders with fairness, courtesy, and respect; and being an advocate and supporter of departmental and Communications Directorate initiatives and values.

Key skills and experience required for the role

You will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and multi-task. Ability to work quickly and flex to changing priorities in a busy environment across competing tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong eye for detail and good personal impact.
  • Can build strong working relationships across a diverse network and with external stakeholders including the media.
  • A self-starter who uses initiative to drive progress and suggests improvements.
  • Experience of working in a press office environment is not essential.

This role is being advertised on a permanent basis. If preferable, Loan or Secondment options will also be available for existing Civil Servants (Loan) and applicants from accredited NDPBs (Secondment).   • Annual Leave: 25 days on entry rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro-rata for part-time staff
  • Privilege Leave: 1 day - for the King’s birthday
  • Hours of Work: 37 hours (net) per week for full time staff in all geographical locations, including London and pro rata for part-time staff
  • Occupational Sick Pay (OSP): one month full pay/one month half pay on entry, rising by one month for each completed year of service to a maximum of five months’ full pay and five months’ half pay
  • Mobility: Mobility clause in contracts allow staff to be mobile across the Civil Service
