About the job

Job summary

We are seeking a Communication Infrastructure Engineer to work with our combined military & civilian team to deploy copper and fibre cabling solutions, install cable containment, and carry out repairs and equipment moves. This role has a significant hands-on engineering element and the work we do is a key factor in the overall success of this fast paced and prestigious unit. If this opportunity sounds exciting, read on!

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. Applicants can request further information regarding how this may work in their team from the Vacancy Holder (see advert for contact details). Defence Business Services cannot respond to any questions about working arrangements.

Job description

To deliver and maintain our fixed voice and data networks, you may have to work in challenging environments such as:

  • at high level,
  • with power tools,
  • in cramped conditions,
  • and/or outdoors.

High quality safety clothing and equipment will be provided, and we will make sure your tasks are carried out in accordance with Health & Safety legislation using safe systems of work.

On a regular basis, you will support the Data Centre Management team to ensure Network Equipment Rooms are well-maintained and safe. You may also be asked to:

  • Supervise 3rd party contractors during critical maintenance.
  • Collect information and help maintain an accurate Enterprise-wide cabinet asset register.
  • Work with the Site Co-ordinating Installation Design Authority (SCIDA) to ensure our work meets MOD installation standards.
  • Be available outside normal working hours as part of an on-call roster to respond to out of hours faults, incidents and emergencies (allowances and additional hours payments would apply).
  • Take part in an annual cycle of activities including required training, identification of development opportunities and performance management.

A full induction programme and on-the-job training will be given initially. Depending on availability and performance, further professional development can be offered through external training courses.

In the future you may be offered the chance to play a greater role in major and minor communications projects, including a multi-million pound new-build development. There is also scope for the role to evolve over time to make the best use of your individual skills and interests.

NB: Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance must be confirmed before starting this role.

Person specification

We are looking for a service-focused person who has a strong aptitude for technical skills and engineering. You should use your initiative to take ownership of problems and work through a logical process to resolve them. Effective communication with team members and customers in person, by telephone and by email is vital. Being able to use a computer competently and being comfortable using common business software packages, e.g. MS Office is also a requirement.

To be successful in this role, you will need to work well with your hands using hand and power tools, and to transit independently and safely between buildings across a large site. A basic standard of physical fitness is required to work safely at height or in confined spaces.

Essential and Desirable Criteria

As a minimum you must have English and Maths qualifications at Level 2. (This is a prerequisite for many technical & professional courses.)

Individuals with relevant professional qualifications, e.g. Level 2 Award in Communications Cabling; Level 3 Diploma in Professional Competences for IT & Telecom Professionals; Certified Network Cabling Installer (CNCI), will be prioritised. These qualifications or similar courses could be provided as ongoing professional training depending on performance.

Travel to other sites will be a regular requirement so a full UK Driving Licence and the ability to drive Fleet 4x4 vehicles would be useful.

Experience and understanding of Data Centre and Network Equipment Room (NER) environments and principles would help you learn and perform in the role faster.

To be successfully appointed, you should hold current Developed Vetting or be prepared to undergo the enhanced security clearance process, which can take 6 months to complete.

Benefits

Alongside your salary of £25,500, Ministry of Defence contributes £6,885 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.
