As a part of the Data, Insights & Systems team within the Commercial function, this role is primarily responsible for the management and production of data and reporting. Further expectations include advocating a self-serve approach to commercial data products, co-ordinating regular commitments and offering key support to Commercial stakeholders.

This Higher Executive Officer position is ideal for a candidate who is passionate about data, possesses strong analytical skills, whilst being eager to learn/develop. Reporting into the Data Lead the primary expectation is that the post holder will build and maintain key business reporting dashboards whilst developing new products. In addition to the mentioned structured reporting duties, the role requires the ability to work with the wider team to deliver ad-hoc insights whilst identifying trends and developing the data story for UKHSA Commercial.

Location

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) operates a hybrid working model where business needs allow.  This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month) working at one of UKHSA's locations (Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and London). For certain roles, some additional flexibility may be possible, which will be agreed upon with the hiring manager based on individual requirements and business needs.

Job description

As a Commercial Analyst, you'll be the bridge between raw data and actionable insights, playing a pivotal role in informing strategic decisions within the organisation alongside your colleagues in the Commercial Data, Systems & Insight team. Your primary responsibility will be to process, analyse and interpret complex datasets to uncover trends, patterns, and correlations.

The successful candidate will primarily be trained to work using Microsoft’s power platform within the 365 suite, specifically Power BI. With Power BI, you'll design and maintain interactive dashboards that provide stakeholders with real-time access to key metrics and trends. Your dashboards will not only facilitate data-driven decision-making but also enhance stakeholder understanding through intuitive visualisations and custom reports.

In this role, the analyst will be expected to demonstrate a proactive approach in addressing ad hoc queries by displaying initiative and problem-solving skills. The successful candidate will receive support in developing the ability to independently identify, investigate, and resolve data-related inquiries as they arise.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Commercial Insights & Data team on the reporting of Commercial data and performance against KPI’s
  • Responding to urgent and sometimes complex data queries delivered to tight timescales
  • Conducting exploratory data analysis to identify trends, patterns, or data anomalies
  • Driving continuous improvements in the way the Commercial function inputs, processes and utilises data

Person specification

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of no more than 500 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the essential criteria (for full details of all essential criteria please refer to the attached job description):

Essential

  • Advanced MS Excel
  • Experience in delivering solutions using a logical evidence-based approach
  • Strong analytical skills with focused attention to detail
  • Adept at analysing data from multiple disparate sources
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to neatly explain complex concepts to a wide audience

Desirable

  • Experience working in a Procurement/Commercial environment
  • Business Analysis capabilities including requirement gathering and a structured approach to problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with data visualisation tools (Power BI, Tableau).
  • Strong IT literacy using Microsoft 365 and SharePoint
  • Public sector experience
  • Relevant degree

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT: 

You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the full list of essential criteria as detailed in the attached job description – please do provide evidence of how you meet this. Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history. This will be used in the sifting process and will be scored.

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW 

This competition will involve an interview by video. 

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.
