Job summary

Based in HM Naval Base Portsmouth.  The Service Entry Medical Cell is a department sitting within the Head of Recruitment and Attraction as part of the People and Training Directorate.

It delivers effective, efficient, and accountable Service Entry medical assessments to candidates' pre-entry, on service transfer and re-entry to deliver individuals physically and mentally ready for Phase 1 training and service.

The post holder will be part of a department providing advice on candidates’ medical fitness for entry into the Royal Navy including the Royal Marines, the Maritime Reserves, and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. 

 Workload includes policy development, complex casework determining fitness for military service in difficult and disputed cases, support to contracted medical examiners and the New Entry Training Establishments.  The post is full time with the flexibility of virtual working.

This position is advertised at 40 hours per week role and Hybrid working. There are no on call work/commitments required for this position.

Job description

To work with Recruitment and Attraction’s Medical Division to ensure appropriate Royal Navy input to Joint Service Publication 950 the Joint Service Manual of Medical Fitness, at the Medical Employability Standards Military Judgement Panel.

To advise Head of Recruitment and Attraction on all medical matters, including the fitness for Service entry of civilian candidates and re-entry or inter Service transfer of previously or currently serving personnel, within the bounds of confidentiality as detailed in General Medical Council guidelines. 

To staff casework related to complex cases, difficult and disputed determinations of fitness for Service entry or specific military employment in all civilian candidates.  This personal caseload is 1600 cases per year. 

To advise the Contractor on medical standards and support Military Medical Examiners assessment of candidates’ fitness for military service in accordance with JSP 950, in response to submitted inquiries.  Personal caseload 800 pa.

To liaise with the Practice Medical Officers of New Entry Training Establishments regarding cases discharged “Not Finally Approved (Medical)” and to advise Head of Recruitment and Attraction and the contractor of any follow up regarding concerns with Military Medical Examiners.

To maintain appraisal and revalidation in accordance with General Medical Council and Faculty of Occupational Medicine guidance so that all professional activity reflects best practice, is subject to professional oversight, and is properly defensible.

Person specification

We are looking for someone who has:

Appropriate clinical skills and experience to provide medical 
oversight. Registered medical practitioner on the GMC Specialist Register in Occupational Medicine, holding a license to practise and in date for annual appraisal and revalidation.


Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to form strong working relationships with the existing Service Entry Medical Department,  military and non-military partners.


A proven track record of working collaboratively within teams.

Strong written and verbal communication skills
A commitment to undertake continuing professional development throughout their career.

Important Information

This role will require full UK security clearance. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.
