Job description

Nuclear Safety, Resilience and Regulation (NSR&R) Team is a part of Nuclear Directorate that delivers policy objectives in relation to nuclear and radiological safety policy and emergency planning. Together with partners in industry, regulators and government we work to keep the country and the world safe from the potentially harmful effects of radiation.

We are looking to fill the vacancy of the HEO Civil Nuclear Safety Policy Adviser that sits within the Nuclear Safety, Resilience and Regulation (NSR&R) Team.  We want someone who has ability to plan and prioritise their workload and work calmly under pressure. They should also have excellent organisational skills, communication skills with the ability to engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

The role is diverse, mixing policy development, project delivery, comms, and stakeholder engagement. You will need to work both independently and with others to deliver across a range of complex issues, sometimes to demanding timescales. It offers wide ranging stakeholder engagement opportunities and flexibility to work with the team’s SEO and other colleagues on discrete projects. The role also presents a fascinating opportunity to find out more about the civil nuclear industry and the framework for radiological safety, including the possibility of site visits within the UK.

Person specification

This is a stretching post with a variety of responsibilities and developmental opportunities within the safety function.

Key duties/tasks that the candidate will be responsible for:

• Lead on providing the secretariat function for multiple DESNZ-chaired groups, including the Radiological Safety Working Group (RSWG) and the senior-level Radiological Safety Group that sits above the RSWG.

• Improve collaboration and experience sharing between nuclear regulators

• Support coordination between the safety team and the multilateral team within the Nuclear Cluster

• Lead on oversight of incident reporting at nuclear sites, working with ONR and other nuclear cluster colleagues.

• Develop policy around radiological items picked up by the Cyclamen programme operated by Border Force, jointly with the Home Office and radiological safety regulators, as well as support the Transport and Standards lead on other Nuclear Transport Safety matters.

• Is the team lead for correspondence cases, Parliamentary Questions (PQs) and Freedom of Information (FoI) requests, standard lines, briefing requests and monitoring the team inbox.

Skills and experience

• Working on own initiative with good attention to detail with ability to organise and deliver work to tight deadlines.

• Strong written and communication skills, with the ability to work with a range of stakeholders, including experts.

• Problem solving skills with the ability to work calmly and at pace under pressure.

• Confident at understanding and handling technical information

• Strong IT skills (i.e. the ability to work confidently in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Teams).
