Job description

Do you want to work on some of the biggest challenges of our time in one of Whitehall's biggest and busiest departments?

Working at the top of the news agenda on issues such as energy security, energy bills and tackling climate change, we’re looking for a Chief Speechwriter and Head of Editorial Team to join our high-performing Communications Directorate.

You will write top quality speeches (including for parliamentary debates), articles and opinion pieces, and other content for the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero and wider ministerial team.

Your work will cover a wide range of subjects from energy security and boosting the economy, to renewable electricity, nuclear and fusion energy, to how we will meet our net zero targets.

This is a high-profile role which involves working closely with the Secretary of State and our ministerial team. You will have direct access to them, and the opportunity to attend high level meetings, speaking events and visits.

In the Communications Directorate our values are critical to delivering on our mission and purpose. We recognise that different people bring different strengths, skills and approaches, which together form a team which is greater than the sum of its parts.

Person specification

  • Deliver outstanding speeches, articles and editorial products for Secretary of State and Ministers.
  • You will lead and manage a team of speechwriters and maintain a first-class editorial team supporting the ministerial team.
  • You will capture the voice of our ministerial team, with the ability to translate complex policy into simple, clear and impactful language.
  • Manage the overall speech process from proposal and content development, through to delivery.
  • Provide strategic advice to shape speeches and wider editorial activity, including horizon scanning and helping to deliver messages to external and internal audiences.
  • As part of the Communications Directorate senior leadership team, you will help deliver the entire communication function across the full range of specialist disciplines, as well as provide visible, motivational leadership and supportive line management to your team.

Skills and experience

  • An ability to work collaboratively with Ministers and a wide range of senior colleagues
  • Confident, self-starting and imaginative
  • Outstanding writing skills
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • Resilience – able to respond to direct feedback and assimilate salient facts from a mass of information
  • Excellent judgement, proven while working effectively in fast-paced environments.
  • The ability to set direction and lead a team to see the connections between politics, policies and issues.
  • Speech writing experience is essential. The successful candidate will have significant writing experience with ability to capture the distinctive voices of our Ministers and translate it into compelling prose that will be delivered to audiences worldwide.

Benefits

Alongside your salary of £70,550, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero contributes £19,048 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.
