Job summary

DE&S Deca is a specialist part of Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) tasked with supporting a vast range of defence avionics, electronics and components to provide high-quality, cost-effective support to the UK Armed Forces. We have a rich heritage as the MOD’s in house repair, maintenance, overhaul and upgrade service provider by offering innovative solutions to guarantee best value for Defence.

The role requires you to maintain and manufacture 'Specific To Contents Containers' and bespoke items in accordance with Defence Standards for Air, Land and Maritime and other customer requirements.

Being mindful of the scrutiny on Public Sector pay and in accordance with Civil Service Terms and Conditions, salary on appointment is normally at the minimum point of the salary range and this should therefore be the expectation. Existing Civil Servants will be appointed in line with the normal Civil Service pay rules.

Job description

The responsibilities of the role include:

  • To carry out tasks, directed by Team Leader, observing and complying with the requirements laid down in quality procedures, relevant publications (Defence Packaging Standard 81-41), technical drawings and complies with all statutory requirements such as COSHH.
  • Promptly report defective equipment or property, accidents or incidents to the Team Leader/Supervisor, assisting in subsequent investigation and reports as directed.
  • Interpret engineer drawings and verbal instruction in order to produce what is required to meet customer requirements.
  • Ensure the correct cut and machine authorised materials are used i.e. environmentally certified timber, board and packing material.
  • Ensure the correct machines and tools are used to produce the required items.
  • Apply protective finishes by hand including stencilling, graphics and authorisation markings as required.
  • Identify any design problems, product or material deficiency and report immediately and keep management informed and updated of work in progress.
  • Assist Team Leader in setting timescales, material quantities for new manufacture and estimates for repairs.
  • Reverse engineer samples of containers, materials and components brought in for new manufacture or repair.
  • To assist in the design of prototype STC’s and manufacture new items and find remedies for faults in existing items.
  • To also manufacture items from cushioning (chip foam and polyethylene and the like) to the required specification and instruction.
  • To design patterns and technical jigs to enable one item or multiple quantities, to be manufactured, altered or repaired in a cost and time saving procedure.
  • Supervise jobs when working with semi-skilled and skilled personnel from within the Carpenters shop, and hold responsibility of quality of work and the completion of appropriate and accountable documentation.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • An understanding of English and Mathematics.
  • Advanced City and Guilds in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable understanding of The Woodworking Machines Regulations 1974.

Desirable Criteria:

  • IT literate including Microsoft Office.
