Job summary

DE&S Deca is a specialist part of Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) tasked with supporting a vast range of defence avionics, electronics and components to provide high-quality, cost-effective support to the UK Armed Forces. We have a rich heritage as the MOD’s in house repair, maintenance, overhaul and upgrade service provider by offering innovative solutions to guarantee best value for Defence.

Working within a UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) compliant laboratory environment, the purpose of this role is to calibrate, verify and adjust as required, the customers’ electronic or mechanical measuring equipment to a given engineering specification. The role also ensures traceability of the calibration using defined procedures and IT systems, and complies with legislative and organisational standards.

Being mindful of the scrutiny on Public Sector pay and in accordance with Civil Service Terms and Conditions, salary on appointment is normally at the minimum point of the salary range and this should therefore be the expectation. Existing Civil Servants will be appointed in line with the normal Civil Service pay rules.

Job description

The requirements of the role will involve:

  • Performing calibration verification & certification of electronic or mechanical test and measuring equipment in accordance with the Approved Data.
  • Completing all relevant paperwork and updates to IT systems/databases both during after calibration activities.
  • Management of own time and work load to ensure deliveries meet the required schedule.
  • Assisting colleagues/apprentices by sharing experience and knowledge.
  • Working in accordance with the Maintenance Approved Organisation Scheme (MAOS) ensuring that the correct authorisations are held and kept current.
  • Ensuring work area cleanliness and tool control is maintained in accordance with DE&S Deca process and standards.
  • Analysing and interpreting test readings to make decisions on adherence to specification.
  • Raising Technical Queries for problems with documentation or procedures.
  • Suggesting possible solutions. Design and/or building suggested calibration aids.
  • Assisting with development of tasks, documentation, etc.
  • Problem solving with different departments within DE&S Deca Sealand – Material Handling, Engineering, Test Equipment Controller, IT, Facilities.
  • Undertaking routine maintenance of DE&S Deca Electrical Equipment as required.
  • Proof reading new or amended technical documents.
  • Operating unsupervised as a Cat B stamp holder, with the associated legal liabilities, as stated within the MAOS authorisation procedures. 

Person specification

Essential criteria:

  • Experience within the test / repair / calibration of electronic / mechanical equipment environment
  • IT Literate
  • BTEC ONC in Mechanical or Electronic Engineering or recognised relevant Mechanical or Electronic Engineering apprenticeship or similar accredited training. We would consider candidates qualified to a similar level as stated above through experience
