Your role will be to help the department anticipate, prepare for, respond and adapt to incremental change and disruptions in order to survive and prosper.

Job description

  1. Support in the delivery of an effective Business Continuity Management programme.
  2. Support business units in the embedding, analysis, design, implementation and validation of business continuity management-related initiatives, policies, programmes and services.
  3. Support in the review and validation of business continuity plans through exercising and testing.
  4. Support in the maintenance of an accurate assessment of threat, risk and organisational readiness, including risk owners and lines of accountability.
  5. Support in the co-ordination of the identification and documentation of business continuity risks and issues, and act as an escalation point for mitigation.
  6. Support seniors to deliver the department’s incident and crisis management response through a corporate central service.
  7. Maintain a flexible approach to work and potentially take on other business continuity, resilience and security workstreams as required.

Person specification

  • You will be managing a team inbox which is the initial point of contact for all resilience & business continuity matters. As such, you’ll be required to process, sort and archive these to triage time critical approaches.
  • You will be required to make initial decisions, escalating where necessary, to ensure effective communication, guidance and support is provided to colleagues.
  • You will be comfortable engaging with and influencing stakeholders at all grades and be able to challenge business continuity behaviours or actions where necessary.
  • You will develop, maintain, and improve functions to map, assess and improve the maturity of the Business Continuity Management culture within DHSC.
  • You will support the SEO’s/G7 by helping to develop and embed the business continuity lifecycle across Directorates as well as act as Secretariat for a number of Boards.
  • You will continue to upskill and develop your Business Continuity knowledge using materials from and access to recognised specialists such as the Business Continuity Institute (BCI) and UK Government Security.
  • We can offer role specific training to support your development in resilience and business continuity or more laterally in the wider security field.

Key Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • You should have experience of building a network of colleagues and contacts to achieve progress on departmental objectives and shared interests and support cross-departmental/cross-government professional communities.
  • You should be able to demonstrate that you are able to work with some direction and have the ability to make some risk-based decisions based on the evidence available to you at the time.
  • You should have some experience of designing and delivering presentations in a number of formats, to audiences of varying sizes and seniority.
  • You should be able to show evidence that you are organised and can run a number of areas of work concurrently.
  • Demonstrate prior experience within a resilience and/or business continuity role.
  • To have a Certificate of the Business Continuity Institute (CBCI), or Membership of the Business Continuity Institute (MBCI).

Desirable:

  • The ability to build an understanding of the strategic drivers for business continuity and align your activities to contribute to the wider organisational priorities.
  • The ability to encourage contributions and involvement from a broad and diverse range of staff by being visible and accessible and play an active role in developing talent within the profession.
  • Familiarity with ISO 22031:2019 Business Continuity Management Systems and ISO 22316:2017 Security and resilience.
  • We are looking for people with good experience working on Microsoft products including Outlook, OneDrive, PowerBI, SharePoint and others.
  • It is desirable for candidates to have business continuity or organisational resilience relevant qualifications, either academic, vocational, or practical (i.e., relevant police, military or corporate resilience function) AND they should detail these in their application.

This role is being advertised on a permanent basis. New Entrants to the Civil Service

New entrants appointed in grades AA to G6 will receive DHSC’s modernised terms and conditions:

  • Annual Leave: 25 days on entry rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro-rata for part-time staff
  • Privilege Leave: 1 day - for the King’s birthday
  • Hours of Work: 37 hours (net) per week for full time staff in all geographical locations, including London and pro rata for part-time staff
  • Occupational Sick Pay (OSP): one month full pay/one month half pay on entry, rising by one month for each completed year of service to a maximum of five months’ full pay and five months’ half pay
  • Mobility: Mobility clause in contracts allow staff to be mobile across the Civil Service
  • Probation: 6 month probation period
