About the job

Job summary

The Home Office is here to make our country safer. As well as working to protect the most vulnerable, reduce crime and enforce the law, we also work to, and have a proud history of, providing refuge to those who have been displaced or are seeking asylum. Whether it is fighting crime, protecting our borders or combating slavery, the Home Office (HO) is at the cutting edge of public policy in this country and our work is some of the most challenging and rewarding in government.

The role of the Public Safety Group (PSG), which sits within the HO, is to keep the public safe by protecting the vulnerable, cutting crime, disrupting the highest harm criminals, and ensuring that our police, fire and rescue services are as trusted, efficient and effective as they can be in delivering front line public services.

The people in our Group develop and implement policy, provide funding, and deliver legislation. We make the most of innovation, data, and partnerships to protect the vulnerable, prevent crime, and tackle the highest harm crimes. We work with our partners in law enforcement, establishing governance arrangements at a national, regional, and local level.

Tackling serious violence and homicide is a top Government and Ministerial priority. This work is delivered by the Serious Violence Reduction Unit (SVRU) in the Crime Reduction Directorate (CRD) in PSG. As well as tackling serious violence and homicide, the CRD leads the Government’s efforts to tackle neighbourhood crime, drugs misuse, and county lines.

Job description

This area of business is fast paced, with high visibility and an opportunity to contribute to the real impact of reducing and preventing serious violence. The role offers a good opportunity to develop a variety of skills, such as in business management, programme management and grants management, while supporting the Unit to deliver our funding and strategic commitments for serious violence.

Some of the programmes we are responsible for include:

• The Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) Programme - VRUs bring together key partners to identify the drivers of serious violence and deliver a multi-agency response to them (funding up to £47.4m for financial year 23/24).

• The GRIP Programme – providing investment to police forces to carry out ‘hotspot policing’ in the areas most affected by serious violence (funding up to £30m for financial year 23/24).

• The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) - a high-profile £200m investment over 10 years, focused on targeted early intervention with those children and young people most vulnerable to involvement in serious violence.

• The implementation and delivery of the Serious Violence Duty, a £13.1m investment for this year. The Duty requires a range of specified authorities to work collaboratively, to share data and information to analyse the local problem and put in place a strategy to prevent and reduce serious violence within their local communities.

• Trauma Informed Practice - an innovative intervention to help frontline workers recognise and respond to trauma in the young people they work with.

• The Winter Homicide Initiative – a coordinated Cross-Government initiative aimed at preventing homicide.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estates capacity, by Spring 2024. Applicants can request further information regarding how this may work in their team from the Vacancy Holder (see advert for contact details).
