DCTT Vision 

The Defence College of Technical Training (DCTT) trains and educates highly skilled technicians and engineers to meet the operational demands of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. One of DCTT’s School’s, The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME), plays a key role in delivering world-class technical training to soldiers and aviators across a variety of engineering disciplines. Currently based at MOD St Athan, DSEME’s sub-school, No 4 School of Technical Training (4SoTT) will be relocating to MOD Lyneham over the coming months, which presents an exciting opportunity to join the Royal Air Force 4SoTT to deliver Trade Group 5 (TG5) initial and specialist trade training.

Job description

Our Burnham Lecturer roles offer interesting, demanding and rewarding opportunities to shape and nurture the next generation of Technicians and Supervisors, helping to prepare them for demanding operational roles.  

As a training specialist working within a high performing team, you will be involved in developing and instructing highly skilled RAF technicians, as well as completing training needs assessments, creating a theoretical and practical curriculum.

As a Burnham Lecturer you are specifically responsible for;

  • Delivering training in accordance with the training schedule, Defence Policy document https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/jsp-822-governance-and-management-of-defence-individual-training-education-and-skills and the 4SofTT Training Quality Manual (TQM). The areas of training you will cover, depending on your specialism, will include mechanical science, mathematics, engineering theory, electrical and electronic science.  The subjects you will teach form part of a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in engineering. 
  • Making preparations before starting an instructional period to ensure that training areas, lesson plans, VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) content and supporting course resources (tools, hand-outs, training aids etc) are in a serviceable condition. 
  • Undertaking regular Continual Professional Development (CPD) to address developmental goals and maintain currency with the latest Technology Enabled Learning systems available. 
  • Taking responsibility for ensuring that the conduct, punctuality, discipline, dress standards and safety of all students meet the required standards. 
  • Ensuring student and course documentation/administration is completed in line with the TQM
  • Ensuring compliance with responsibilities to students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) and engaging with the Learning Support Coordinator as required. 
  • Undertaking Additional Trade Training and Extra Trade Training in line with the TQM 
  • Remaining current in Instructional Techniques, in line with the TQM, and assisting the respective Training Coordinator to enable Content Monitoring observations to be taken. 
  • Highlighting discrepancies and assisting the examinations manager to review any examination questions that are not valid.

Person specification

The ideal candidate should be a great communicator with the ability to effectively describe complicated ideas to different audiences. You must be well organised, proficient in time management, and have good public speaking skills. You'll be required to be both proactive and reactive, assessing the skills and knowledge within the group and determining what training is needed to grow and nurture these individuals. 

We are seeking candidates with an electrical specialisation rather than a mechanical specialisation  

Specific Qualification Criteria for Electrical Specialisation:  

A minimum of a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (engineering, maths, science).  

Familiar with electrical engineering management practices and trade policy.  

Vetting under the Disclosure and Barring Service (this will be undertaken prior to onboarding if successful).

Selection process details

The sift will be conducted on a CV and Statement of Suitability (Personal Statement), as well as three behaviours listed:
