About the job

Job summary

The Home Office is one of the original great Departments of State. As such it is constantly evolving to ensure that it keeps pace with the changes in the communities it serves and that the people who work for the Home Office reflect the make-up of those communities, while having the up-to-date skills required to contribute effectively progressing policy objectives. The role of the Home Office is fundamentally important: to keep Britain’s streets safe and its borders secure. Each and every member of Home Office staff plays a part in making that happen. With a budget of £14.7bn, the Home Office leads on immigration and passports, drugs and crime policy, counter-extremism and counterterrorism and works to ensure visible, responsive, and accountable policing in the UK. These issues are at the heart of the Government’s agenda.

Job description

This is a new role, with accountability to the Home Secretary, leading the newly established Border Security Command (BSC), which is being set up to deliver the Government’s commitment to reduce border security risks to the United Kingdom, including organised immigration crime and illicit commodities. As a key member of the senior leadership team in the Home Office, you will own the end-to-end strategic direction for all HMG work on Border Security, working in partnership with other agencies and departments such as the National Crime Agency, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Intelligence agencies, making full use of HMG’s wider security and border capabilities to improve border security, providing system wide direction and prioritisation. You will work closely with Ministers and officials across Government and you will establish, lead and develop a command which ensures that the border security system has the right capabilities to address the threats facing it.

Person specification

You will be an exceptional leader with senior-level experience of delivering through a large and geographically dispersed workforce, which spans several disciplines and specialisms. As an innovator, you will have the vision and drive to create an environment where novel and creative solutions to complex problems can be developed and evaluated at pace, and you will demonstrate a track record of shaping organisational culture through effective change leadership. A strong influencer, collegiate in approach and able to forge effective relationships, you will be diplomatic, with the skills and credibility to gain the trust and confidence of Ministers and senior stakeholders and the resilience to operate under regular political, public and media scrutiny. With experience of developing new, sustainable, and productive strategic partnerships with a broad range of diverse and challenging stakeholders, your experience will enable a diverse and collaborative working culture that encourages openness, approachability and is supportive of challenge.
